Copper related article topic wanted.

I'm sitting here just having finished a writing assignment for college, and I still have the word processor on and ready to go. I would like to write a cent-related article about something, but am unsure what to write about. Anyone have any ideas on something they would like to read about? Try to keep it in Lincolns so it will remain related to my site, and if I see a good one, I'll write it up tonight and post it here over the weekend.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

How about the controversy surrounding VDB and why it was hated by the mint director and the lobbying efforts to put the initials back on somewhere else.

How about die deterioration (with pictures) showing proofs, first stike coins how the coins are becoming less and less detail oriented finishing fith filled dies, lamination etc.

All great topics to write on. The VDB topic will take some research, but Sadysta's idea is something I could write on in my sleep. Keep'em coming!

  • You've given us loads of good things already. How about tips for finding doubling on wheat reverses! I just can't seem to spot the spread in the wheat tips. It's gotta be time for a new prescription too, based on my lastest submission.

I've got Memorial reverses pretty good, because of your clue about the oval shape on the dot.

Umm, the wheat reverse is the one with the oval shaped dot. The memorial reverse doesn't have any dots near the rim. Best thing to use there is the initials, because they are close to the rim - to the right of the memorial base.

It's a good idea, I'll write that one up too....(making a list of things to write about).

How about something about the steel cents? Maybe trace the legislation around and the usage of the copper and the use of the brass shells for a while? Would be interesting given the current climate.

Or on the transition year of 1909 and the making of three coins (indian, vdb, no vdb)

Or on all the design modifications made over the years to strengthen, slightly modify, or ruin the elements. (ruin meaning the current single press die production method).

Geesh, Neil....some of those would take a week of research and another week of writing - but I'll do it. I'm just that much a glutton for punishment!

    writing...writing...got it. Any more?

  • How 'bout under-appreciated semi-key dates? The 10S comes to mind...it's one of my favorite dates in any series.
  • Identifing markers distinguishing the differences between 1922 cent and the 1922 no d cent.Photos would be helpful.

I'd love to see an article on composition and supply. You could include cold flow properties of copper, the steel cents, the brass casing shells that weren't, the 82 varieties differentiated by weight, the plated zinc cents, the toxicity of zinc, the difficulty striking the cent, etc.

How about a discussion on the various master hubs used, when they were introduced, and the differences between them?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • coppercoins - If you're looking for a "hot" topic, upon which a lot has been written (thereby reducing your research time), how about the 1959 mule? Nice history, controversial, and of great interest! (at least to us "wheatheads")

If you're looking for a quickie, maybe a short paper on the development of the design and some info about VDB. Maybe find a pic of the original galvano or something.
  • I'm starting to get more and more into Lincoln's but I don't have a great deal of information. How about an article for newbies?

    Thanks,

    coppercoins:

any guesses on what the future holds for the Lincoln? you KNOW something's gonna happen in 2009, only what?

    1. a simple "1 year" commemorative reverse
    2. change the reverse
    3. change the obverse
    4. "retire" Lincoln from the cent altogether
    5. "retire" the cent altogether (gasp)

I didn't mean to confuse folks, this article I was going to write has nothing to do with college...it is to simply be a part of the site and something for people to enjoy reading. While all of the ideas given are good ideas, some of them would take a rather involving amount of research, which I do plan on doing for the site eventually, but it's hard to do while I'm sitting at work one evening.

Anyhow, I picked the topic and started the article, and it will be published and posted here this weekend. Thanks for the suggestions, I have copied all of them down and will eventually get to each one of them.

How about the color of copper.Early dates,P mints,d mints and s mints.Natural color vs accepted color, wood grain toning and the cause of it.Certain dates and the properties associated with these dates.
When you're done you can start on memorial cents

    Stewart
  • I like Stewarts idea and a tough topic to boot. What "is" acceptable toning or color. You can show a "Pumpkin" and a real original coin.
