Question for late 70's football collectors

Hey guys, I was hoping you might be able to help me with your opinions or experiences. I collect Dallas Cowboys cards 1972-1988. I have a fairly good number of SGC cards, mostly 96's. Now that PSA has put several Cowboys team sets on the registry I would like to start working on those. My question is, with the current value of SGC cards seemingly falling would it be smarter for me to just pay to cross all my cards over or to sell them, take what I can get and then start working on the PSA stuff? I'm sure that this is a question of opinion, but I thought I'd benefit from hearing others experiences or thoughts before I jumped in any particular direction.

Thanks!

  • Personally, I'd keep the SGC, as I prefer that company and their holders. I would consider grading some specific years in PSA only, maybe one where I only had a few SGCs that needed to be crossed, so that I had a diversified mix. By the way, I probably wouldn't sell what I already had just to look for another PSA copy of the same card, unless I thought the SGC card were overgraded and wouldn't cross well.

As I see it, assuming PSA cards have greater re-sale value, then you need to ask yourself:

    1. When would I realistically re-sell these cards? It may be that if you don't plan on resale for several years that the market may have changed and the values are the same or SGC is greater. Why risk the possibility of reslabbing in PSA now and perhaps have to reslab back to SGC later? Face the slab issue when you're determined to sell; and
    2. How important is it to me that I be on the PSA registry for these cards? SGC now has its own registry, so the whole world, in theory, could know the status of your sets. If you believe it more important that the PSA "world" see your sets, or you have a mine is better than yours/ mine is the best approach for having them listed, then maybe you consider the cross over.

    My two cents....................Todd

I recently crossed over a bunch of SGCs to PSA.

What I did was first decide if it would be cheaper for me to get the SGC graded(original price paid for the SGC+ $10 for grading) or to buy an equal grade PSA card.

For the cards I really didnt want/need to keep, I checked out the completed auctions to see how the SGC versions were selling. Then checked out how the equal PSA cards were selling. If it was worth the extra $10 to cross them over, I did. If not I just sold them as SGC's.

In my experience, 75% of SGC cards will cross to the PSA equivalent. About 10% will grade lower, about 10% will grade higher, and about 5% will get a Qualifier(usually OC). So check the centering before crossing unless you don't mind the OC.

Hopefully I gave you some insight, if not well I just wasted 3 minutes of my life..LOL

Sorry I can't help you. I'm in my mid-40's, but my father is in his late '70s. image

Kid4hof03-I would wait for a registry special on 70's and 80's cards and cross them over. If you were to sell them in the SGC holders and than buy the PSA graded card later you are going to end up losing money and not gaining a better card. For example, if you sell a card in an SGC 96 for $50 and than turn around and buy the same card in a PSA 9 holder for $75 you are losing $25 and the card you will have is probably the same quality.

I have had less than average success with crossovers but most of my crossovers have been in 61-62 Fleer Basketball and 57-58 Topps Basketball. SGC has been far too generous on the centering grades and most of my 84 and 86's have crossed to 6's. I would think from the 70's and 80's that SGC 96's should cross into PSA 9's as long as the centering meets the PSA criteria.
  • Dan,

That was good! I'm from Indiana and I had to read it about 5 times before I had any idea of what you were talking about.
