largest crossover spread

OK -- new thread; let's see where it goes.

Everybody who has sent a slabbed coin in on crossover (one slabbing company to another), what is the largest crossover spread you saw, and from what to what? E.g. "I sent in an AU50 and it came back ten points higher: MS-60. That sort of thing. Just curious.

    1883-O S$1 MS64....was ANACS 64
    1880-S S$1 MS64 ...was NGC 64
    1881 S$1 MS63......was PCI 64
    1880-S S$1 MS63....was SEGS 63

ACG PR70CAM to PCGS PR67 no cam.
NGC PR68CAM to PCGS PR64 no cam (there was a legitimate reason for that one, though).

  • ICG MS 64 crossed to PCGS AU 58.

BTW, AU50 to PCGS 60 is not really ten points. Rather, its more like 4 grading notches.
  • PCGS MS65 FB 1940 D Merc to NGC MS67FB - and a high end 67 at that. I now understand those who complain about a 50% grading guarantee covering only overgraded coins but not undergraded ones

We are finite beings, limited in all our powers, and, hence, our conclusions are not only relative, but they should ever be held subject to correction. Positive assurance is unattainable. The dogmatist is the only one who claims to possess absolute certainty.

    First POTD 9/19/05!!

  • bought an ugly, heavily toned acg au53ish coin a fews years ago, cleaned her up and it came back ms64 from ngc. think it was a seated ¼ or ½. i've had many, many acg coins cross at higher grades at both ngc and pcgs...but it does take a lot of looking.

  • thanks folks... keep 'em coming.

geb209 - thanks, you are quite right. I was typing hastily and wanted an example. And in any case it is eleven points (ten intervals) in any case.

  • Last year I had a 45 micro s merc go from a PCGS NO GRADE- environmental damage ???image to a NGC 67. Would that be a 67 point spread???imageimage
A dealer once asked me if I noticed any three-legged buffalos on the bourse,to which I replied,"...no,but I saw alot of two-legged jackasses..."

This Cleveland was in a PCI VF30 holder and jumped 15 spots up with PCGS (now in an XF45).

The only 'problem' is it REALLY is a VF coin and I didn't want it to upgrade. image

  • It was not unusual to see a VF 25 coin be raised to XF 40 or a VF 30 being raised to XF 45 while I was at PCGS. There are occasions when a grading service can be quite far off on grading circulated coins. The majority of the graders at all the grading services spent a major portion of their coin careers buying and selling higher end mint state coins to make a living. Let's face it, if your talented enough to grade for a grading firm. You would rather sell 10 $1000 coins rather than 2000 $5.00 coins. Handling circulated coins is very time consuming process. It is also very lucrative segment of the market that is often overlooked.
That is where I spend most of my time these days looking at circulated coins.

    1926-s buffalo, pcgs-35 -> anacs-12 (23 points differential)

i had 3 other buff's in pcgs "vf+" holders fall into anacs "fine" range, but the 23 point differential is my personal record.

  • My biggest jump was PCI 58 to PCGS 63 on a 57' flying eagle.

Love them PCI holders. The older the better.

    OK, I'll play!

Had an 1856-D quarter eagle go from PCGS XF45 to NGC MS60. (Typical weak strike explains the confusion?)

Had a gold dollar go from NGC MS64 to PCGS PR66. (I thought it was MS66PL.)

Had a bust half go from ANACS MS62 to NGC PR64. (I really don't know if this was a true proof, but it WAS a good deal!)

I bought a 1795 half cent raw as VF20. First, I sent it to PCGS. Came back in a body bag, altered surfaces. Sent to NGC, came back VF20. Crossed back to PCGS, came back VF35.
