PCGS 1953-d Franklin ms65 FBL

What is the deal with this coin?
I see the value listed @ $450.00 on PCGS,Coin World has it @ $ 400.00.
I see it selling in adds anywhere from $ 375-400.
However,
Everytime I see it on E-bay it goes for peanuts.
$ 125-200. I know the price guides are a bit steep, but the 2 numbers are not even close.

I was thinking about selling mine to feed my Lincoln habit, but want a fair price.
Are Franklins just slow right now?

Thanks,

Kevin

  • Coin World Trends and PCGS price guide are way overblown for that series. A better rule of thumb for more frequently traded issues would be in the range of 30-40% of their numbers.
  • I usually go 50% of PCGS value, unless its a coin I really want, then....the sky is the limit!

Depends on if it is toned or not, sometimes I have been getting closer to 70-90% for brilliant ones. Just depends on the date.

  • 53D is a funny coin. It'll go for something in the $120 range if average toned, but in the $250 range if it's beautifully toned or brilliant. Take your best shot on the BST board and make sure you have a very detailed picture. MS65FBL coins are on the way up again I have a feeling.

Good question. I just found this post. It is hard for me as well to price the Gem Franklins. I have a 1953-D MS65 FBL but in a NGC holder. It has just a bit of light toning, not the ugly heavy mint set toning some have. I tried to sell it on ebay. I had a nice detailed picture of both side. I started it at $99 and had no bids. Trends shows around $400 for it but nobody wanted it for $99. Most of my Franklins are brilliant or just had some rim toning so this one doesn't match. I know the brilliant ones can often go for much more -often double on teletrade over a toned one. Mine isn't that bad so I decided just to keep it.
