Do you think PCGS would certify this Buffalo?

I found a raw 1918/7-D buffalo nickel for sale and wondered why a coin this expensive was not certified. Does anyone have an opinion on whether it will certify and what the grade might be?
Thanks, Charlie

  • I don't think it would slab at PCGS or NGC With it being a Fine it is to shiny my guess is cleaned. Why it's not slabbed by ANACS that i don't know

Looks like maybe a borderline vg/f to me
also looks a bit too shiny on the reverse

I didn't think it was cleaned... might be... I have some uncleaned buffs that look that way in the right light...

Hi Russ, No I didn't shoot the pictures, they came off the dealers web site. I wish I could take pictures as good as those.

  • Have you examined the coin personally? Are these your photos or are you considering the purchase based on them? My initial reaction is that I find it curious that you have a nice full shot of the reverse and the only "clear" shot of the obverse is the date. I realize the date should be highlighted on this type of coin but I'm getting one of those "check it out closely" feelings. I'm thinking compare the wear marks on and around the date with the rest of the obverse.

"edit" You replied before I finished typing.
  • The coin looks to be a genuine overdate as it appears to have the diagnostic die crack just above and to the right of the knot of the Indian's braid, the "8" has the proper characteristics, and the "F" under the date looks like a "P".

Grade looks to be VG technically with a small shot at Fine if market graded.

Likely will slab because of rarity if not harshly cleaned.

I am like some, looking at the reverse photo it appears to have a cleaned look, but from the other pictures I would say it hasn't been. It looks original enough to be slabbed even at PCGS. I personnaly think the coin has a potential chance at F-12 at PCGS, the over-date is strong and the rims are solid with enough meat. The only thing they may hit is the reverse, which looks more of a vg-10. Remember, There is a monster spread between vg and Fine on this date?

Of course this is my opinion???

maybe the dealer values his opinion more than that of pcgs. perhaps he thinks the coin would get overgraded in plastic!

i had buffaloes w/that amount of horn detail, and they would be vf+ in pcgs slabs. when they went into anacs slabs, they got slammed down to "f-12", etc.

i think buffalo nickels are the least consistent series between plastic co's.

This coin in my opinion is VG-10.

However, as stated by some it could possibly be slabbed market graded as F-12.

(But I wouldn't pay F-12 money for it)

I believe PCGS would grade this overdate...

If the question is authenticity, the scan looks OK to me...FYI, genuine 18/7 Buffs have the mint mark tilting slightly to the left, as this one does.

If the question is cleaning, the scan does not look bad enough to body bag.

Just my opinion...I could be wrong...David Hall

One still wonders how the buffalo will feel about being certified. They really dont like being handled

you know. Being as large as they are, that could be a problem. In any case would the buffalo

be stamped Prime, choice or just average meat on the hoof.

Yes Bear, the buffalo probably wouldn't like to be certified, but the bison, could care less imageimage
