Ever get tired and try to make your own coin?

How many of you have gotten tired of looking for a certain coin and decided to find one and submit it just to see what you get. Seems like a good test of our grading abilities. I getting this 1916 Mercury and will submit it to see what it gets. Looks to be a good strike, possible nick on neck( I hope not). Seller has excellent feedback. Guess the grade and I'll post as soon as I get it back. Leave a little explaination as to why you grade it that. Thanks1916 Dime

MS63fsb, reason, the bands look full, and cause its a guess???.......i dont know the series much, but who knows, could go au58 fsb or 63.
Family, kids, coins, sports (playing not watching), jet skiing, wakeboarding, Big Air....no one ever got hurt in the air....its the sudden stop that hurts. I hate Hurricane Sandy. I hate FEMA and i hate the blasted insurance companies.
  • That is a really sweet coin i think you have a great chance at making a 65FSB. That line on the neck looks like the start of a die crack. the pics are hard to grade from but from whats there i don't see any reason you shouldn't get that grade. Lets just hope it's not cleaned or tooled. Great find!!

Sure have! And I have spent a lot of money at the slabbers. Now I'm scaling back and taking a whole new approach. Essentially, I'm being patient. image
  • NW, what was your success rate? Any opinion on this dime?

tsacch is 100% correct. 63FSB max, mushy strike, multiple hits on the fasces.
My penetration rate with the big three grading services is about 80% accurate and I have submitted
thousands of coins. I would not send the coin in, 1916 Mercs come in great quality and you should
not have a problem finding a quality example.

I think the dime looks great! If the bands hold up as well as the pic suggests, looks to be a very nice pickup for the price.

As for my success... Well the coins I tried to make have been big time (or almost big time) toners. So far I've got 3 made and 1 was questionable toning. 4 waiting right now. The best of the ones I've made is a 1923 MS64 peace with a redbrown-gold toning over 90% of the obv. In the shipment waiting right now are two '55 frankies with red toning on one side and steel-blue on the other. Both with booming luster.

With the BIN price, it seems the dealer does not feel this coin is MS64FB or the would have had a higher BIN. The picture sure looks full bands - maybe they screwed up and you got a great deal - hope so.

PS - you didn't say how you were going to make the coin you needed - are you going to glue on a D?
  • I got the 16-d in AU55. That will have to do for awhile. Just need to upgrade the more common dates. Unfortunatly, my Merc PR registry set has reduced my funds a little. I just think it'll be fun to try a few submissions and see how good my grading abilities are.
