What do you think about a Collection Cooperative?

I'm not even sure PCGS would allow it. On the other hand, why not? If PCGS allows "phantom sets", why not real sets constructed by a collectors "cooperative"?

My thought is to put together the absolute finest set, based on the (PCGS) pop report, by allowing multliple collectors to participate in the set with their "finest known", "pop top", what ever you want to call them, coin(s). Look at the sets. Many are never going to reach the "absolute finest possible" level because someone holds the stopper, a better coin. A higher grade, a DCAM, a FH, a FBL, etc.

As for the series, what ever is decided. Perhaps a Type Set. And why not do more than one set? I think it would be fun to see such a set assembled. Even if it's on paper only. No one gives up their coins. We just allow the use of the coins cert number to be used by the "cooperative". Because the same coin can't be used in more than one set, the "cooperative set" wouldn't actually compete with the Registry sets. Rather, it would represent the culmination of what Registry already contains.

I see nothing in the rules which either prevents or prohibits this, so why shouldn't it compete with the other registry sets?

I recognized this wouldn't be an idea that would be imbraced by all. In part because it requires finest known, or tied with finest known coins. The intent is to assemble a collection, with as many collectors that's needed, which is the absolute finest set you can assemble.

As I said previously, there are Current Finest, and All Time Finest sets that fall short of being the "absolute" best because they require upgrades. In some cases as few as 1 or 2 coins. A cooperative collection would gather, from many collectors, the finest collection possible.

Oh well. Just a thought. image

The Eisenhower collector club has such a set, so it can be done.

I thought that's essentially what the pop reports are.

If they are actually assembled before being submitted many objections would disappear.

wow greg if the ike dollar collectors do this i can see why their coins are hotly contested and there is much collecting of them they are way ahead of the times in terms of collecting and enjoyment and much participants this gives more chances to everyone and i think just makes more demand and fun for people!!

    Because it's not a set.

It sounds like a neat idea and would be kinda fun but it seems obvious on the face of it that
it's not fair to the other collectors. I don't see the Miami Dolphins being forced to play
against an assembled Pro Bowl team.

If we didn't register it though it sounds like it would be a fun exercise.

  • I think it's a neat idea. Would be just like a local coin club, just not that local. image

I see the argument that it's not fair to the other registrants in the series though. Maybe if PCGS made a series just for this? The combined collecting power of the entire board would be a grand statement. image
