1893-S Morgan, what has its price trend been?

nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
I'm thinking that within 2-3 months I may take a plunge into my most expensive ever coin. And I think it will be an 1893-S (low-end, of course, VG-F range). Does anyone have an idea of what the "performance" of this coin has been? Yes, this is part investment part collection. Yes, I know all the usual caveats so let's skip that and get to the details.

Or do you have another idea for a good part investment, part collection key date coin that will perform better?

  • Even in VG, the price is pretty high. I my opinion I will buy a 1889CC or do you have it already??

    The closest thing I have to a key is what unlocks my front door and turns my car on. image
  • Straight frigging up, from what I can see....image

    I'm in the same boat as you...looking for a nice VG-F. There was a real nice F-15 on ebay a few weeks back that got away from me...

    For investment purposes, mid-high grade Carsons have been going up pretty solidly...look for a better date rather than the "common" 82-84 CC. Even lower grade 89-CC, while still pretty expensive, have been keeping a pretty good price pattern up. ( Retail TRENDS, my VF20 89-CC is up over 100 bucks from where I bought it a year or so ago...20% give or take)

    Well, for this one, I'd actually go with a dealer. I have one in mind though I have not said anything to them. They've never bought anything for me before but I've watched how they work.

    The thing about the 1893S is that it has that same "magic" I think that the 09S VDB does. Whether there are rarer varieties and all, it is still the king of the series. I've got about $1500-2000 to spend on it within a couple months so I'm looking for a good one to plunge into.
  • Unless the coin market goes all to hell, that coin is going no where but up...

    the 89-cc ain't a bad idea either, cc's have been increasing over the last few months

    Got Morgan?

    Unfortunatley, I have more knowledge about this topic than I would like...having been the idiot who failed to consumate a deal for a VF35 for $3,200 less than 6 months ago. To answer your question for this coin in the VG-F range, however, let me start first with the trends value for this coin since Jan. 2000:

    In VG the price appreciation has been:

    Jan. 31,2000: $950
    October 1, 20001 it jumps to $1050
    Sept. 30, 2002 it jumps to $1200
    Nov. 11, 2002 it jumps to $1250, where it remains today;

    Trends value in the Fine grade over that time frame are as follows:

    Jan. 31, 2000 the price is $1,250...
    October, 1, 2001 the price jumps to $1,500
    Nov. 11, 2002 it jumps to $1,950 where it is today.

    Turning to the current Greyheets, the VG is listed as $1,050 ask and $1,150 bid;
    The F is listed as $1,305 ask and $1,400 bid....

    My very simple take for this is that if you get a chance to buy a properly graded coin within 10% above the Greysheet ask, buy it now and ask questions later.

    Or better yet, turn down the deal and give the seller my email address! Cheers. Lots of us looking for the same deal.

    Wow, good info Gregory! Thanks for that. I'm not in a position to pull the trigger right now, but I will be soon. Hopefully one will be available when I do... Always a wishful thinking thing...

    Here are mine; 89CC is PCGS VF25 and the 93S is PCGS VG08. Even in VG08 the 93S is a four figure coin. Scott

    An 1893-s is obviously a tough coin. Spend more and shoot for VF 25 TO VF30. I think the higher grade makes the coin more desirable and will mostlikely do better.

    Hmm, if I were to do that (get a better one) then I'd probably need to sell some coins first! Maybe I will part with my dearly beloved peace dollars... image

    I think you will be better off with any lower circulated grace for this coin, even a G6. Just make sure the aesthetics are good: even wear, nice color and no obvious distracting marks. And by it slabbed, unless you are close to your dealer.
