2003 Commemorative half-dollar?? Opinions Please

The year 2003 is the 40 aniversary of Kennedy's death.

Do you think the mint should do a commemorative coin of this? Or should they wait more time to do it??

What do you think???

  • image I believe they should wait ten more years! The 50th and 100th mark would be the keys! A minor change perhaps, but no full blown Commemorative!image

We still have a Kennedy half dollar out there (sort of).

I'm mad we missed the 100 yr. Commem for William McKinley's assassination two years ago. Until we get that done, I'm going to complain about any 40 yr commem for Kennedy's image
  • I think the same way. I was just curious what other think about this after a read a letter in numismatic news about this commemorative, but in 2003. 50th is a more special ocasion
  • yes.. the Kennedys are out there. Most people think they are not in circulation since 2000 or 2001. BNut the mint gave a report that in 2001 there were struck more than 30 million Kennedys for circulation... Isn't it a bit odd we haven't seen a Single one?

Nahh...He's already got the half and it's time to get rid of that too. Just my opinion.

    Cheers,

No. First of all, 40 years is not the right number -- 50 is better, 100 even moreso. Secondly, we've already got lots of Kennedy half dollars. Thirdly, commemoratives usually celebrate good things -- a commem for his birth would be better. Look for a Kennedy commem in 2017, then...

  • Yes, I'm not sure the 40th is appropriate or not, but, I think the mint would be making a smart marketing move to issue one for the following reasons:

I personally don't see a commercial need for the half dollar now, and I doubt, given the low mintage over the past several years, that it will be around in ten years.

A commemorative at this time may spark new interest in the coin. Look at the total number of quarters minted each year as compared to the years before statehoods. If for no other reason, maybe folks would start hoarding halves and possibly spark a new interest in the series.

Some folks have commented on the possibility of a commemorative honoring the Columbia disastor. Is it a good idea to tie it to a Kennedy commem and sell it as the guy who launched the space program?

    Just random thoughts.
