Are Papa Tony's coins as good in person as they look on eBay?

Papa Tony's Link
Are these worth the prices that they bring? Some of the Morgans look fantastic. Anyone buy any of these?

I haven't bought any so do not know - my only thought is Papa Tony's collection never seems to end. Reminds me of Deb who killed off Harold to sell his coins.
  • I bought some Lincolns from him. They were close enough for me to NOT send back for the price I paid. The service was good and shipping quick. I would consider buying again.

  • I've bought at least 50 Lincolns from Papa Tony, (Eagle Eye Eddie, Greg) and of all of them, I would say the grade he advertises is accurate to within a point, i.e. his 65+ is 64-66. I had only one disappointment, a 29-S which I thought was lightly cleaned but did not return it since it was a close (judgement) call.

He's a reliable shipper and has always been very polite with me in my dealings with him.

Lastly, just remember that you're still buying raw, with all of the attendant risks.

  • I have bought many coins from him. I have always been satisfied with the coins and in fact some even grade higher than he estimated. I believe that if you were dissapointed he would probably return your money. He has even sent me some coins, "without payment" and let me look at them before purchasing. Not many people do that!

  • I had a customer ask me about this seller once. When I checked his listings, I found he was using stock photos (not the actual coin being offered). I felt this was deceptive, as he descriptions lead you to believe it is the coin you will be receiving. I can't attest to the quality of the coins, but you will not be getting the coin in the pictures.

  • I did get some Ike dollars from him and although BU had to many marks to be more than MS 62 let alone 65. I did return them and no questions asked refunded the monies plus 1/2 my postage!

This is my first post. I bought 4 coins recently from Eagle.Eye.Eddie. The first was a blast white 1887 P Gem Bu Morgan $ 1. What I got was a MS 62 1887 P Morgan Dollar with gold rim toning. The second was a blast white 1901 O Gem Bu Morgan Dollar. What I got was a 1904 O MS 63 Morgan Dollar. I bought a 1943 S Ms 65++ FSB Mercury Dime. What I got was a 1943 S MS 65 Mercury Dime that was not even close to FSB. There was no split at all in the center band. The last was a 1942 D MS 65++FSB Mercury Dime. This was close, except for the scrape in front of the designers initials on the Obverse. I returned the coins yesterday and hope for a refund. The coins you get are not the coins shown in the digital images.I did get a reply email saying sorry that the coins didn't meet my expectations. My expectation is that the coins would be as represented. Not even close.

I have seen him setup at at least one national show. I can bet that the coins he is selling are not from his collection. Seems like another dealer to me.

Well, he must be doing something right, his feedback is over 2000 without a negative. However, I am always suspicious of seller who images coins at an angle, and I can not really get a good feel on his Morgans. You have to wonder why a Morgan like a 1902-S is being sold as a "Gem BU" which would imply to me the coin is at least a 65. Perhaps he is one of these guys who refunds shipping both ways and is happy to stick those who do not know how to grade. No way to tell here, but I won't bid on coins that are shot at an angle.

his feedback says 100% but he got a negative about 5 days ago. how is that possible?

I don't know anything about that seller but flags go up for me when the photos are tilted and there is only a photo of the obverse.

You're right JB, I didn't look beyond the 100%. And the complaint is the coin is not as advertised, again shown at an angle.

Yes his pics are stock. But, all the war nickels I bought I was very happy with. The two Lincolns not so much but the price was low. The guy is easy to deal with. Once I bought a 1944-D Jeff from him and received a very nice 1944-S. I emailed him and he quickly responded that he didn't know how the S got on there. He told me to keep the wrong coin and he sent me the correct one. He will often send unc coins as change. I'll gladly deal with him again if he has something I'm looking for.

If he uses stock photos, he really should say so in the description.
  • I have bought a LOT of coins from him...All were exactly as I expected, and I would NOT hesitate to but from him again. He was friendly and shipped in a timely maner.

He did the same to me on an errant shipment. I got to keep a low date Lincoln "S" and he sent me the "D"..

He has a lot of common date Morgans that look to be going cheap. I'll buy a couple and see how they measure up to the description. I like to keep some raw Morgans around anyhow.
  • Ebay probably is rounding the percentages. If one has 2001 feedback rating with one neg., then 1/2001 =.00049, which when rounded to 3 decimal places=zero.

  • NO!!!!!!!!!!!! The pictures are great the coins are SO SO!!!!!!!!!
  • I bought several uncirc. Lincolns from him also. A couple I was disappointed with, but they were exchanged promptly and without problem. (I sent them back a second time for refund because I felt they weren't up to par.) The rest were nice coins, but am not good at grading uncirculated coins. They appeared to be as advertised - but thanks for the heads up on the photos. He also sent several free uncirc. coins with my purchases (one each time). I never had any problem dealing with him, and all emails were promptly answered. I would buy from him again.

This is a follow up to my post of March 10th, 2004 on the subject of my EBAY purchases from Eagle Eye Eddie, Papa Tony's or Gregory Sarles (the same person). I returned all four of the coins on March 9, 2004 requesting a full refund. The coins were badly overgraded and one was the wrong date. The coins I received were not the coins imaged in the EBAY listings. On March 16th, 2004 I made email inquiry on the status of my refund. I received a responsive email stating that the refund check had been mailed from Minnesota on March 15, 2004. It is March 25th, 2004 and I still have not received the promised refund. Gregory Sarles has asked me to wait until March 27th at which time he will send out another check. I note that Eagle Eye Eddie has recently started posting to these message boards. Any suggestions on how to deal with this fellow?

Twice in the past couple of months I've had people inquire about mail after 10 days only to have it show up the next day. Give a a few more days. Gregory can be a little slow at times but I beleive very honest IMO.

If you have MS66+ or PF67+ merchandise, you want to show it. And if I'm paying more than $50 for a coin, I want to see it!

  • mightyhunter, you are correct, he did recently join the forum. Perhaps you could inquire via the PM function to him. I would suggest that, if the check does not arrive in 2 more days, he do a stop payment and mail you a replacement check via Priority Mail.

  • I once received a refund from him - I am almost positive your check will arrive. I don't know him personally, just relaying from my experience about 1.5 yrs. ago.

I sent him a money order over two weeks ago. Still haven't received the coin.
  • K6AZ, are you sure you ordered a coin? Or did you order a pizza?

Well I hope it was a coin. A pizza would get kind of cold by time it got here from MN.

This is a follow up to my posts of March 10, 2004 and March 25th, 2004. I had hoped this matter would be over by now. Communicating with Eagle Eye Eddie a.k.a. Gregory Sarles a.k.a. Papa Tony is not a problem. We exchange emails regularly. He has even given me his telephone number. I was told by Mr. Sarles that he mailed my first refund check on March 15, 2004. It never arrived. He claims that he mailed a replacement refund check on March 29th, 2004. He now claims that the replacement refund check was returned to him on April 2, 2004 because he forgot to place a stamp on the envelope. He waits 3 more days and now claims that he mailed my third replacement refund check out on April 5, 2004. I have repeatedly asked him to send it Priority Mail. He doesn't do that. It is only 850 miles from his post office to my own in Wyoming. I have advised EBAY of the situation. I have also filed an online complaint for mail fraud with the USPS. If I finally get a refund, should I give this guy the 4 negatives he deserves as feedback? Bear in mind that the last guy who negged him for overgraded coins, received retaliatory negative feedback. My feedback is currently 100% positive. Any suggestions?
  • That's because he buys raw coins on Ebay. Saw him buy several raw coins on Ebay and questioned him. NO REPLY. He buys many on Ebay, Papa Tony is his HOOK!!! Stay away, if he can't be honest about the sourse steer clear. He's not even smart enough to use another Ebay ID. Very easy to catch him. image
