Has ACG ever bought a mismarked coin back??

fivecentsfivecents Posts: 11,207 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have an ACG 1920-D Merc dime graded ms63 FB. This coin is not a ms63 FB, But looks like a solid non FB ms60 grade. Ms60 bids at $80. Well guess what.... this coin has no mintmark !! It is really a 1920- P(bids at $21.00). Do I have any chance of buy back with ACG. Misgrading is bad enough, but if they get the date or mintmark wrong that is much worse imho. Any opinions would be very helpful.

Did you check carefully to make sure the mintmark didn't fall off, and is rattling around loose in the slab? Wouldn't be the first time that happened.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • To my knowledge, ACG offers no guarantees on anything at all, ever! Sorry to hear about your dime. Besides, I wouldn't want to send it back to them for re-encapsulation anyway.

    kranky,

Yes, I have checked the coin and the holder . The coin holder is mismarked. I am well aware of their reputation, but unsure of what they will do fix it.

I don't think label errors are covered by any of the services other than they will correct it.

I don't think they will do anything, couldn't you return it to the place you bought it from or was this a done deal of buying the plastic and not the coin?

    Android,

Sounds par for the course from what I have heard about them. So they don't back anything they grade. What a rip !!!!

    Placid,
Thanks for the info. Not checking the mint mark was a stupid mistake on my part. I can't belive I missed it ! Knowing that none of the grading services cover label errors makes me feel a little better about this.

    mbbiker,

    Done Dealimage

I have had this coin for a while. I will have to check my records.

  • No matter what the slab says, it's still a $20 coin. How about eBaying it as an "error slab"? Could get an interesting price.

I will post a picture next week. A friend has the coin to show to some dealer friends.

    shocker,
Great idea !! maybe some error slab collectors would bid on it.

Okay, now this is going to get interesting! My suggestion:

Offer to sell the coin to AH Collectibles (Hagar's company). Act as if it is a 20-D. They may not even notice that it's a P. It says 63 FB, so you would think that they would offer you close to MS-63 bid....right? If he offers you 60 bid, then you can ask "why?". Hagar does the grading at ACG and he is the owner of AH Collectibles. It would be interesting to see how much his grading opinion changes when he is buying.

Now, if he notices that the coin is not a 20-D, but rather a 20-P, then you could fein a panick attack and rant about how you paid MS-63 money for a Denver coin and that you are going to lose hundreds of dollars because of ACG's mistake.

I predict that they will not be interested in buying your coins and will have plenty of excuses for you. They will offer to fix the label and then recommend that you sell your coin on ebay.

Don't they advertise no numismatic complaints in over 15 years? Tell them you plan on putting an advertisement in such and such periodical for sale of this overgraded, wrongly attributed, and mislabeled coin unles THEY make it right. You paid for their grading service and you expected a level of accuracy that they did not fulfill - next time you will buy in flips or 2x2's unless they do something.

Actually, it's no "major" complaints. Thousands of regular complaints don't count.

    Paul,

PCGS and NGC occasionally make clerical mistakes, and they WILL reholder your coin with with the correct label for free. I have no idea if Accugrade will change the insert and re-holder it for you. Whomever you bought it from, I hope, make you whole for the deal.
