Interest in Team Sets on the Registry?

this thread stems from a recent minimum set percentage thread that was on the boards. I'm a Reds hound, collecting vintage Reds team sets from the mid-50s to the mid-70s. I generally do not collect cards other than from the Reds Teams, but do have some vintage Rookie cards from players that I followed as a kid - Aaron, Koufax, etc. You can find my current Reds Team Sets in the following years registry sets - 1956, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1974, 1980, and 1981)

My question for the Board is this. Do you think that there are enough Team set collectors to justify a separate team set listing on the registry? I know that a few team sets have already been approved and are listed on the registry, including various Dodgers, Tigers, and Reds individual year Team Sets. With these limited exceptions, Team Set collectors have no option but to list our teams under the general set registry. I know there are a lot of Yankee's, Phillies, and Pirates fans out there. Are there enough to justify a separate category for the Team set collector's?

  • I would be willing to participate. I'm currently collecting LA/California/Anaheim Angels in Topps. I've thought about submitting a registry request but wasn't sure if it would be worthwhile.
Looking for Los Angeles/California/Anaheim Angels in PSA 8 or better
  • Jeff,

I think there would be much interest in Team Sets. I think this would provide a lower cost option to many collectors to actuall "complete" a set.

    Are you listening PSA????

A couple of days ago PSA listed some Dallas Cowboys team sets. One of the sets listed was a 1972 Topps Dallas Cowboys Football set. I decided to list my 1972 Topps Football cards in that set (If I don't lose the images from my original set while trying to do so.) I am listing these cards, not because I am a die hard Cowboys fan, but because I think those individuals who requested this set may like to view my cards.

My feeling is, if PSA has the time and space to add these teams sets, then GO FOR IT!!!

I am interested in team sets as well. I submitted a request for the 1980 Phillies team Set recently, so hopefully that one comes up soon. One thing I have found in regards to requests - BJ is very responsive.

I believe that it would only benefit PSA to have more options for set collectors, as the Registry is one of the things that keeps the competition at bay.

I think team sets should also be included -- somewhere, somehow.

Neal: I would be interested as to what you included on the 1980 Phillies Team Set. Did it include OPC? Kelloggs? Burger King? I think it is somewhat problematic for some of these later-year issues where sometimes you have the same card with the same picture -- and other times the same player with different pictures in different sets. I collect Philadelphia Phillies cards from across the years. I like my T206 and Sporting Life Issues as much as my 1980 and 1981 Topps. I like my OPC and Topps Venezuelan as much as the regular issue Topps. Resolving this isn't necessarily easy -- but could there just be one place where you could list all your cards from a particular team set? Just curious.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • When you look at the individual player sets, they call the standard Topps set the Basic set and the set including all cards which show a picture of that player (be it League Leader, All Star, Checklist, International or demoestic) a Master set. This idea would easily fit the Team Set concept. Alternatively, you could simply have OPC and Topps Venezuelan Team sets from that same year.

I have my 51 Bowman Philadelphia Eagles listed in the 51 football set. I became aware of the 10%
minimum requirements after reading the other thread. I wish I could afford to do the whole
set. Since the set is 144 cards and the Eagles make up 12 cards what I might do is add three other
players so I can keep my set registered. Although I wonder if someone offered a group or lot
of these cards graded in lower condition that might make me go for more?

    1420,

I still haven't submitted the Philly set you asked about. Sorry. I hope to add it this weekend.image

I like that idea, I am a big Pittsburg Steelers fan and I would probably do some team sets if they were listed up there.
  • Jeff,

I would very much be in favor of a Reds team set. I've been a lifelong Reds fan - through good and bad - and would very strongly consider working towards teams sets from the 60's and 70's. I know you're putting together quite a reds collection. I would really like to see what all you're collection consists of (just to be jealous).

I have already submitted Green Bay Packers team sets for 51,54 and 55 Bowman to BJ.
If the interest is there I will submit team set from many other years (especially the 1960's) for the Packers.

I would like to do a complete run of Topps White Sox team sets. If they set up a team set registry it would motivate me to get going. It would also net them a few more submissions, Why else would my 1980 Topps Chet Lemon get graded? I hope they do it before another company beats them to the idea.

  • Just a little word on my experience with the team sets. I never thought about submitting anything to the registery until one day I noticed that there was a 1961 Yankees team set. I immediately submitted requests for the 1959, 1963, and 1965 Dodgers because I had been collecting them. When I submitted my request, I did not list what cards to include and BJ used a baseball database to determine the players (I think it was Sabermetric). This was not the best method because it included players that played on the team but whose card was not as a Dodger for that year. Example, Chuck Essegian's 1959 card is as a Cardinal, not a Dodger.

After many emails, we finally got it straight; however, not all the cards are included in the sets. Initially I was only collecting players that actually played during the year, so some cards were left out. In essence, BJ let me determine what cards to include but I am not sure that was the best policy. If you notice in the 1959 Dodger set, many cards are left out. Bilko, Bessent, and Giallambardo are not included. Perhaps a specific formula should be set for determining the composition of a team set.

In any event, I love the team sets (and player sets too) because I would virtually be unable to participate in the registry otherwise.

Marc, I just requested the 80 Topps Only Phillies, including the team card and record breakers. No OPC or BK, just Topps. I agree that the other issues look exactly alike so there is no sense in adding them.

Tony - Get on it! kidding ...

ALL TIME PHILADELHIA BASEBALL looks like it is next on the list to be added. Curious to see how that pans out.

  • I am very interested in team sets, in fact, I requested the All-Time Braves Set. I am very thankful for BJ and all of her help. I agree that she is extremely responsive. Though it hasn't been determine as of yet, I am interested to find out if these All-Time sets will require specific cards of each player or if the collector will be given the opportunity to choose. BJ has told me that the All-Time football sets that have been requested have specific cards listed which allows for the weighting of these sets.

  • I notice a lot of collectors who have team sets from multiple years. No one else has mentioned it yet, so how about "decade team sets" - for example, a "1960s New York Yankees" or a "1970s Pittsburgh Steelers". These sets could include every card of every player released from 1960-69 or 1970-79. Since some of you already do a "team set" for a lot of these years, why not compile one set to include all of these cards? I think this would generate more interest/competition between team specific collectors who feel left out when they submit their 10% (+ or -) collection to an annual set. Any thoughts or other suggestions?

  • Jeb,

Great idea! I think that makes a lot of sense.

I am interested in putting together a team set from the Packers in the year they won the superbowl 66 and/or my birth year 67.

Which one do you think would be better. IF you submit it to BJ can you weight it?

    Currently working on:
    *1941 Double Play
    *500 Home Run Rookie Cards

    *1954 Dan Dee
    *1959 Fleer Three Stooges
  • I would also be interested in doing a 1976 Topps STEELERS and COWBOYS Team Sets if someone wants to submit them to BJ. OR let me know all the cards that should be in the set and I'll submit it.

    Thanks

  • I recently requested the 74 Reds Team set, and BJ said that since the regular set was already weighted, they did not need a separate weighting for the Reds Team Set - they simply imported the regular set weighting into the Team Set. I didn't really like that weighting, since it has no correlation to the Reds as a team, but I prefer to have a set weighted poorly than no set at all.

  • I just checked the Requested Sets on the Registry, and noticed that there are a lot of Team sets being requested. If this trend keeps up, we might convince PSA to create a separate category for the Team Sets. Keep it up guys!!!image

I have came across many folks who want to participate but have no interest in setting out to build a 500 or 787 card set, they find the costs and mass of cards to be too far out of reach an simply shy away from the registry altogethor.

Player sets,Team sets,MVP sets,World series Champion sets and so on.The more concepts collectors request than even more opportunity for participants on the Registry.

One great thing about the registry is that its created a better direction for collectors with a goal to be reached upon completing.Be it a player set, or a particuar series one enjoys collecting, when you finish you've accomplished something in the hobby as well as for your own pleasure with card collecting.

Keep up the good work folks. image
