Rolls of BU Morgans sold on TV Vs. My Grandfathers Filthy Morgans

First of all I am a complete newbie to this as I have inherited like 60 chewed up morgans from my grandfather...

I think I read once that nearly any coin older than 50 years or so that was blast white silver had probably been dipped, cleaned or treated someway, so these lots of raw morgans I see on the shopping networks look pretty shiney to me...does that mean they have been cleaned/dipped/treated blah, blah?...I realize that this cleaning subject is taboo...I realized this when I asked my local dealer how I could clean my grandfathers filthy morgans and he nearly zapped me with a cattle prod.

Thank you for reading my firstg post.

  • My first clue about the shopping network was when they were selling gold coins. One of the guys asks "so, how much gold does this coin contain"? The guy responded by dropping the coin on the table with a loud thud, and responded "this much!".

All of the coins sold on the shopping networks will be low-end pieces, most grading AU and BU, with most, if not all, at least dipped. After all, they don't want uninformed people returning the coins because they are "tarnished". Some people say that any Morgan you see that is blast white has already been dipped. I don't agree with that, but there are quite a few dipped coins out there. However, dipping isn't necessarily bad, either...it's just repeated treatments tend to make the coin less appealing.

Cleaning, on the other hand, is a big no-no. Don't say the "c" word around here.

NEVER, I repeat, NEVER buy anything coin related off of the TV shysters. They are ALL a HUGE RIPOFF....

  • I happened to catch the Coin Vault, or one of those other fantastic, informative shows on the "Buy it from Bed" shopping network last night. They were selling a complete series of ICG MS69 Silver Eagles for about $650 or so. One of the guy's selling points was that if you're grandfather had left you just one Morgan in MS69, it would be worth over $100,000 today...and here was your chance to pick up 17 for less than a grand.

Somehow, I was able to resist.

  • But the show is fun to watch. You get to hear entertaining stories about various coins.

  • I agree thats the only reason I watch them. I have seen the same thing on EBAY in the NGC holder much cheaper than on the SAH show's. Thats because there are 2 middle men the show itself plus the contracted company supplying the coins.
  • I saw Coin Vault offer a pre-65 circulated silver deal which, if I was calculating it right, was like three or four times silver spot price. What a ripoff.

That said, I will make an admission. When I started collecting coins about two years ago, I did buy a couple of things from them. One was a deal on IHCs, Buffs and V-nickels. Another was some proof SBAs. I now know that I paid too much for each, but for the record, on those coins the show's description of them was just about accurate.

My main complaint is that Coin Vault offers SO MUCH bullion coin. It seems that they are long on silver eagles, gold eagles, and even platinum eagles and that they are trying real hard to get rid of them. Here's a hint, Coin Vault guys: to get rid of something you over-bought, sell it CHEAPER than market, not MORE. image
