Monsters?

What does this term (in the numismatic context) mean? Where did it come from? It is my humble opinion that it is often used to hype otherwise uninteresting coins? Answers, opinions, comments, please!

Well, monster typically means "extreme" image

In the usual parlance it indicates a very desirable look/eye appeal of a coin

Yes, it is definitely hype in most cases. So are:

    BLAST WHITE
Rainbow (most rainbow coins I see on ebay aren't rainbows)
Semi-prooflike (looks like 95% of uncirculated morgans fall into this if you believe the sellers)
  • I thought it meant it was one scary coin.image

"Moose" was a term used in the past more frequently than it is today- right along with "Monster".

i remember the word monster being used back in the late 1960s... it refers to a coin being very special, if toned, it would have outrageous eye appeal, a coin which would stand out amoung all othersimage
