Toning question

I just picked up a couple mint sets from my local dealer...one has a nickel with a little toning on the outside edge the question is to continue the toning should I leave it in the cello or put it in a 2x2 or folder?

Also, is penny toning just turning brown or is there suppose to be color? Thanks

  • I'd leave it as is, especially if you lioke the colors it is showing.

Pennies can tone with color, but it isn't as common as with "silver" coins. It seems most that I run across that do show colorful toning, are on the road to RB or Brown. Get those into a slab as quickly as possible if you want to preserve the colors a bit longer.

Since you mention that they are Mint Sets and that they have cardboard holders I must assume that they are at the very latest dated 1958. Given that they are 40+ years old they likely will not tone a great deal in a short amount of time unless you subject them to an extreme environment. Putting them in 2x2s will result in a halt to any toning that may be continuing, although, it is possible to have them corrode from the staples used to hold a 2x2 shut.

Sorry, it looks like I mis-read your first post and that you do not state that they are from cardboard holders. My mistake. What I have written, however, holds true.
