Toned 62 Washington, and a question....

Ok,
In my search for nicely toned Jeffs, I'm coming across some really neat other stuff. Here is a 62 Washington, still in the cello proof set, that is absolutely PURPLE (my photography sucks, and this is a quick shot with the proof set envelope behind the set). The color is deep at 5:00, then gradually fades as you work back to 11:00, where it is golden, with a violet hue. The areas around the face and nose are in the cello, and not on the coin.

My question is the little spot just below the neck and above right of the date. There is something on the coin, you can see clearly when you hold it (may not show up well in the pic). It has prevented any toning immediately surrounding it. Any ideas? And does this lessen the "bumped for tone" value appreciably?

Man, if it looks like that through the celo, you have a monster on your hands!

Now, as to the spots; it will depend on the nature. If it is the standard milk spots that are common in these years, and it's only a couple, it won't hurt the grade at PCGS as much as one might think it would. They'll toast a coin (gradewise) much worse for a few hairlines than they seem to for a couple spots.

There is, however, another type of spotting that is considered environmental damage. I don't know any term for it, or what causes it, only that I've seen it and know it would get the coin body-bagged.

Not possible to tell which you have with that scan, but in any event, that one is butt-kickin'!

    Here's an example from 1964:

Through the celo, that one looked "lightly" toned, so that should give you an idea of how yours should look (although the color scheme is different). That one is now in a PCGS PR67 holder and on the way back to me.

Where do you guys get those toned quarters, all I get toned are Nickels!!!image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

    Marty,

That's the only wildly toned quarter I've ever pulled from a set. All the silvers from the set were like that, (and all are now in PCGS slabs), and the nickel was also toned, but more subdued.

  • Nice looking quarter. Some of those cello proofs tone up nicely. BTW, there was a question regarding colors on a proof 62 nickel, and I had my doubts about the color.
Well, I did just find one of mine to look similar to the nickel in the past discussion. Who knew?

It could be a speck of foriegn debris producing a "halo" if you will that didn't allow that area to tone normally and smoothly like the rest of the coin
  • I think Morganluver is onto it, because you can clearly see a tiny ball of something when you look at the coin. And there's a definite halo around it.

Something I hadn't noticed until this afternoon: The Jefferson is also toned, a light violet, not nearly as stunning as the quarter. However, while trying to move the quarter around inside the selo, I realized that the seal between the quarter and the nickel was broken, and that either could "peek his head" into the other's "sealed off space." (LOL...as an aside, if you know exactly what I'm talking about in that last sentence, your spouse is correct...you are a COIN GEEK!!! Be PROUD!!!!) I'm sure this has probably contributed to the toning.

When I bust it out to send it off, I'll be sure to take more pics. That picture really doesn't do it justice. Its a purple monster image
