(Newby) old PCGS vs. new PCGS

From reading the forums, I have a question. I have purchased several old PCGS slabs. They seem to be better coins than some of the equivalent grades I bought. Was there a different grading standard then?

Many would argue that PCGS standards have shifted over the years, from very tight to looser back to very tight. Speaking only for the series with which I'm most familiar (proof Kennedy halves), I agree with that assessment.

However, even during tight periods, not all the coins are undergraded, and during loose periods not all the coins are overgraded. You have to evaluate each on it's own merits and decide for yourself.

And, welcome aboard! Got proof JFKs?

  • Although I have listened intently and read of swings in grading opinions, I can offer no real input due to the fact that I have never purchased, sold, or traded a slabbed coin from any service. Just my preference to deal in raw "shtuff". image

BTW, Welcome to the boards.!! Where is BamaBoy from.? I am from around the Montgomery area.

I'm in the process of assembling a classic commem type set in the 1st generation PCGS holders. I find that some coins look better than the grade and some are right on the money.

There are also those who seem to think that the old holders have long since been cherrypicked and that anything (or almost anything) left in the 1st generation holders will not upgrade.

Personally, I have found that the lower MS grades (60 - 64) in the more common coins are not worth the extra money to upgrade.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

  • RUSS!!!!!

QUIT THAT!!!!! You're gonna start a massive bidding war between me, BamaBoy, baccaruda, Carl, and the other toned Jeff lovers! And then you're not going to sell it to us anyway!

BamaBoy, and hambone...I'm in Alex City. Its looking like there are more of us Alabamians here than I would have ever imagined. And BamaBoy, if you're very familiar with the Redstone Arsenal, I'd be interested in speaking with you. There's a swatch of land in the middle of it that is privately owned...are you familiar with it?

Welcome to the boards, BamaBoy. I have been to HSV many times (going back to when the airport was the "Jetplex") and always liked it. I saw John Stallworth (Steeler Hall of Fame WR) at Darryl's once, and even though I'm from Pittsburgh I couldn't bring myself to go up and ask for an autograph since he was eating with his family. And that S. Memorial Parkway with the roller-coaster effect - never saw that anywhere else I've ever been.

Russ and Outhaul said what I would have.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Wheat cents in the new barcode slabs are almost always better than those in the older slabs. I can only speak for cents, since I dont deal with many other coins.

  • image I also own several of the first slabbed PCGS coins. Comparing old and new, it appears that the earlier slabs, because of cost and possible other factors, dealers and colllectors were very selective of the quality and eye appeal. Now it seems, anything in a proof set, mint set or bank role gets sent in for an increase in price value. There are exceptions, but, MY GOD, every where you look, if it's not slabbed, it is not so;d!imageimage

  • BamaBoy - Welcome to the ever-evolving PCGS grading standards! The past 6 months have been very inconsistant at PCGS for moderns (both ways - to tight & too loose *ugh*) - especially for your (and mine) beloved Jeffs. Several of the highest grade Jeffs I have purchased in the past few months (recently graded) would not have made the grade a year ago imageimage Coins that were basically impossible to make have been poppin' like corn in Orville Redenbachers' kitchen! Keep an eye on the pops of highest grade Jeffs - top pops have been jumping radically and I haven't heard of any hoards of old cameos and superbly struck Jeffs being discovered recently........... image PCGS needs to get a grip and get consistant!!!!!!!
