Has anyone built a complete registry set on their own?

I was just wondering how many of you guys and gals have built a complete registry set on thier own submissions. No upgrades from slab purchases but completely from you own raw coins. If so how well did it turn out!

Just a thought this is kinda what I'm intrested in right now.

Not me image I did not enjoy most of my submission results. I simply buy PCGS coins that I think they are well-graded.

I tried. But, after very poor results, I will buy mostly buy already graded coins. I collect Kennedys and have learned a lot in the last 2 years-even the coins in the older mint sets are horrible!!! My usual submits were 64-65 and a few 66's. I did have some later on such as 65, 66and 67 that I bought from a dealer for about $1.50 each and came back as 66's! At least I now know what to look for, but can't find it. Good luck! Ray

Currently I am building a PRF69DCAM American Silver Eagle set with all raw coins submitted by myself. I just started this set and have the last 3 years already, (2000-2002). I recently bought the 1998 and will send that one in. I have no idea how on earth I will get the 1995-W, but I seen a very nice one in the 5 coin proof set at the local coin show this past Sunday. So far I have sent in 3 and received 3 69's.image

It gives me a great sense of pride knowing these will all be originals.

Most of my modern coins ( really recent ones ) I submitted myself. All of the older coinage I bought already in a PCGS slab.

  • I would certainly respect a set that was built that way. I don't find many superb raw coins, except maybe for a few from recent proof sets...

Paul (stooge) is being too modest. He has made some VERY nice clad dimes, too. Paul has a good eye.

Personally, I think I have about 300 or so PCGS coins registered in various sets and only made 1 myself: a 1917 AU58 dime that I purchased 35 years ago when I was a kid. I have this in my dime set until I get a better one. Plus it reminds me of the dealer from whom I bought it and of whom I have fond memories.

Nowadays, I much prefer buying my coins already encapsulated because I can immediately share them with my kids without fear of them dropping or otherwise damaging them.

  • I made my Ike mint set on my own except for one coin, thats why its not finished and I have been working on it for 3 years. Its tough if you can't get around the country looking for that special coin. I started a lot on Ebay but found that it was not very much fun, looking at pictures of coins. I like to see them first hand.

This would be a near impossible task today for anything other than modern coins. However, if you were looking for lower grade coins, I guess you could do it for most any classic set.

I have been lucky so far with PCGS and my Kennedy's
    7 submitted I thought 69DCAM maybe 70 (LOL)
got back 6 PR69DCAM and 1 PR68 DCAM didn't see a very small spot? I don't think it was there when it was sent but it was when it came back I know my luck will run out sooner or later lets hope later I looked at alot of coins before they where sent My wife thinks I have a girl hidden in my den
I guess when I get my heart broken I will then buy slabbs

I was just thinking that the originator of this thread must be a moderns collector!

My original proof washington set was "built" with purchases of already-slabbed coins. I would say that two years ago the chance of finding pr70 silver washingtons was a hundred times less than nil in "raw."

with my new set of rainbow toned washingtons I would not shop for raw coins fearing they are AT'd. Sticking with the slabs.

Yep All 74 of the Merc Dimes in my set I made myself. Huge....Huge..... image

Looking for a hundred years could not produce 74 different date and mint marked gradeable Merc Dimes now days in MS63 or better. Well maybe they could be found but I really doubt if owners of sets like this would be stupid enough to sell without getting them graded at either PCGS or NGC.

I paid for all of my coins myself... does that earn me partial credit? image

Only a couple of the Morgans in my set were submitted raw, and they were circ. varieties.
    When in doubt, don't.
