Pop Top Mania: 1943-S MS68 Lincoln hits $2k with 22 days before Heritage auction close.

I have seen 67s that look like 68s and 68s that look like 67s. Bottom line, there is little difference. That not withstanding, why is this coin suddenly worth neaarly 3x what it was last November?

This registry phenomena reminds me of tech stocks in 1998-9 when any idiot could make money because bigger idiots were buying basically worthless stock. When tech came crashing down so did quality names like IBM, Qlogic, Amgen, etc. and non tech. Will the same happen with coins?

Will the Pop Top mania burst and drag down bust, seated, and other type series?

  • Interesting, these are not that hard to find, usually, and has a population of 40 other equal brothers. I think that I normally see these for about a grand when they come up for sale.

I remember when I can buy these for several hundred dollars from David Lawrence. I didn't, because I didn't they were such a good deal. Just shows you what I know...

EVP, five years from now you may be able to buy these for a few hundred dollars from DL. Chances are the stuff you decided to buy will be worth more.
  • Desertlizard - I wish I could show you the difference between my 68's and my 67's. There really is a difference. That being said, I can't figure out why the big price increase either. But I paid $1,250 in Feb 2001 for mine. With everything else doubling in the series in the last 18 months I guess this is about right. Insanely right I guess. It is interesting to note that the price on the 43 D's and P's have come down sharply over the last 6 months I believe.
  • I am, as we speak, goin through my 1943 rolls looking for a coin that could go 68. I suspect I am not the only one and there will be more hitting the market in the next few months. Its $2127.00 with the BP!

Interestingly, I paid $1,250 for my "perfect" choice XF 1877 cent a few years ago. Still love it.

For my 1943-S cent, paid $5 for a gem from an original roll back in high school.

I guess I've got it all backwards. imageimageimage

There hasn't been one made in October, November, or December according to the updates Wayne Herndon has posted.

One 1943-D in 68 was made in January. I'll try to post an full update for all dates in couple of days.

  • Steelies come nice, at least from a mark standpoint. The problem is getting that Original untarnished surface. If you have that I think a 68 is a helluva lot easier than with a copper.

wayne: You think I should start looking at those gem 43-P cent rolls I got from you years ago for possible slabbing soon?

just make sure if you buy one you do not break it out of its respective holder

i wonder what this steelie in ms 68 pcgs would sell for if it was broken out of its holder and sold raw????

  • I looked at over 40 67s mostly all P and D at last 2 LB shows. Also saw a couple of 68s and didnt see the difference. They wanted 1200 for the 68 and I bought the 67s. Actually liked them better than the 68s too. Pure pop hype.
