Commemorative Buying Questions

Do you buy commemorative coins no matter how butt-ugly they are?

Do you buy commemorative coins based on the subject?

Do you buy commemorative coins because they exist?

You didn't specify whether you meant the classic or the modern commems, or both. I collect both just because commems appeal to me, and I buy each type, regardless of its aesthetics, because I want the complete set. I suppose if they issued one commemorating cow pies I'd buy it. image

  • I buy them from 1925 because it was the year my father was born and I buy the ones on subjects I like.
When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse
  • I tend to buy modern commemoratives, mostly on looks, then on subject. Sometimes I get lucky (buffalo) sometimes I don't (Cap vis center). But most of all, I keep one of each of the MS silvers for my collection. I like my buff and my yellowstone the most.
  • Just replying to the butt ugly reference.......we can't help it if a design is ugly but if the COIN is ugly because it has acquired fugly toning my advice is to pass. There are enough examples of nice eye-appealing commems to go around (for now) that you don't need a butt ugly coin in your set that you'll always be wanting to upgrade.

I'll buy if I like the design. I will also buy based on the subject. Being an aviation fan, I'll buy whatever the Wright Brothers commemorative looks like.

Heck, last October I drove from southern Maryland to Middlesboro, Kentucky just to see a P-38 fly for 20 minutes. Now THAT'S an aviation fan. I just hope they make a good looking coin for 100th anniversary.

  • I love aviation as well. As a kid my dad would take me to watch the planes takeoff and land at the Memphis airport. I'm an air traffic controller now so I get to see it everyday.

Off the Subject but wanted to respond!

I would like to get a few more of these besides my 2-coin Buffalo Dollar set.Perhaps I could sell the Buffalos to fund a purchase of a nice classic commem.?
Just looking in a Redbook I noticed how nice looking a few of the gold $5 commems are. Those low low mintages of those W mint marks seem like a nice investment if nothing else.image
Any pics to show us of the $5 Ws`anyone?I want a Smithsonian $5 commem.Where do you find one?image

I buy the issues that I like the look of. Oregon, California etc. I don't do any of the modern stuff. No white one's either. image
I like 'em polluted and tarnished........the more the better.

  • I don't think there's a single early commemorative I would classify as ugly (with the possible exception of the wash-carver), but now moderns can be rather annoying..

I buy commemoratives sometimes by subject but always by beauty. In fact, I actually have been thinking of taking a break from classic coins and catch up on some of the modern commems I like.

  • buy most classic comms. within reason. workin on sets in au, 65+,& toned unc. got to throw in mods. when sweet & reasonable $. ugly seems to be a personal perception, seen some ugly people that got lovers. yes I buy on eye appeal of the coin. the more I become involved the more I find all the comms easy on my eyes. all alleged a significant event in some way.
