To Cloak or Not To Cloak

Many who are on the Registry "cloak" their cards so that they cannot be seen by others. I guess their thoughts are that people will bid against them if they listed their cards for all to see.

Has anyone ever experienced a tag team on eBay where people were having friends bid the amount up? Did this ever get reported to eBay? Did they do anything?

I leave my Registry Set open so that others can see what I am missing. And it has helped.

Bidding up an auction happens, and I believe that some of the reason may be the enormous, growing popularity of the PSA Registry. We all know who our eBay "competition" is, and I believe that sellers know who bids on what. I just accept that, and bid my max. If I am outbid, so be it - if that even happens at all.

I will not "cloak" my sets, as I really could care less who sees them. I do see your point however, as some of the competition on other sets is fierce.

I am not in a financial position to hold down the # 1 spot on the Rose registry, nor do I plan to hold my current position too much longer. A new collector registered his/her set the other day, and is now breathing down my neck in one fell swoop! Add the fact that murcerfan tells me some guy in California is waiting, and Marshall Fogel is now on the set - a guy like me has a snowballs chance in hell!

I will keep on trying thoughimage

the ranking of your rose collection should have no bearing on your enjoyment, pride and it's "worth". someday you'll have some loose cash (unfortunatly you have to trade in all your loose women) and with your passion will likely have a remarkable Rose collection in the end.
If not, the Wilbur Wood set airs soon along with the "knothing but the knucklersl" registry.

All my sets are open. If someone is foolish enough to outbid my own stupid bids, more power to him!

  • I think it's a shame that set registry users are even allowed to have the option to "hide" their sets. Come on everyone, if you have a hidden set, it's pretty sad that you feel so proud to show your high GPA or set rating, yet hide all of your cards. I think Dale has a good point. It's happened to me as well - the emails from other collectors/members/ebay sellers letting me know that they have a card that I need. I love to get those emails. The set registry can be a great tool for new and experienced collectors. I love looking at the cards people have registered, especially when they include a scan. I upload a scan, front and back, of every card that I have listed on the registry (somewhere around 1500 or so right now). I know I've posted this before, but I still think it's important for people to do this. Share the experience with everyone here. Please?

IN DEFENSE OF HIDING A SET COMPOSITION:

One of the sets I collect is a mid-1950s set. I do not yet own this set entirely in PSA 8 or better, though I dream of such a day in the near future. If too many dealers or other opportunists know each and every PSA 8 upgrade I need for my set, I guarantee you that that will jack the price up of those cards by *hundreds* of dollars, each. Heck, others may want to hoard their PSA 8's, etc. There are just too many opportunistic reasons that ultimately will a) hurt my wallet and b) negatively impact my ability to complete this set in PSA 8 to let people know which cards I need and which I do not.

That being said -- I like to think that I am an overall nice guy. If anyone has *ever* asked me about what cards I have in my set, I am happy to speak with them in person, over the phone, over e-mail, and to send them scans.

If you don't like the way psa has the registry set up, try going over to sgc.
you can't have an annonymous set. you guys should be happy there.
don't you have better things to worry about?

  • Hi Everyone,

That's funny you bought this up. I was debating today to hide my set again on the registry. It seems every time I have it out for view, a dealer will call me up and offer me a card I need for my next born. When I refuse, I find out someone else bought it for less than I was offered. When you confront the dealer, they do not know what you are talking about. How come when a dealer wants to jack you on a card, they always say "I'm partners on that card with someone else". I mean, do each of them own half of the card? When I hide my set, dealers and other collector have no clue what I need or not and I seem to get better prices. This is a tough issue that I have been fighting with myself for some time.

Well now that I got that off my chest, great post.

Most times my sets are open. Some times they're closed. If I'm close to finishing one - it'll probably be closed for just the reason that mikeschmidt and mrichards have stated. If people show a bit of patience, when I've completed it - I'll re-open the viewing as well.

I actually think that its a nice feature to keep the vultures at bay.

  • My Sets are wide Open.... I also scan the cards.. To me the beauty of the registry is to be able to show my cards and compare my collection to others.... I have not experienced what some other memebers have had occur to them but my collection is not mainstream.... However I have no problem with someone nearing completion or say over 80 % blacking out a set for reasons stated above. But then I see people 10% complete and there set is blacked out .... What's up with that?

  • I post all the cards in the sets I have registered. It has worked for me. I've had other set registry members contact me on trades and bulk lot deals. I am working on a few sets that I worry about manipulation. I just don't register those sets and will post them when I'm over 50%. I feel if you register a set, than it should be public. Otherwise don't register it.
