and the detail on this coin. it will go to anacs when it gets here.
it could be a fake, it appears to be a pattern of some sort.

I don't believe there were any pattern half dollars struck in 1856. Possibly plated? Neat looking coin though.image

I agree with Boiler 100%. You could always have it analyzed to be certain.

I saw the coin on Ebay, but not being able to see it in person, I decided not to aggresively pursue it. It may be an off metal strike, but I would have to examine it to say. The history of the coin is intriguing two of the previous owners are known to me. Neither one was a crook, but they did have some unusual items. Also, it was never listed by Judd or Pollack, who may not have even known about it. Examination is critical. Hope that this helps.

  • There's no pattern half listed in the Judd book for 1856.
This is of such high quality though, that I can see nothing out of the ordinary. It doesn't look fake. Is it perhaps a copper plated genuine half?
I'll study the pictures some more, and if I see anything, I'll pm you.

The coin doesn't seem to be a proof, which the seller stated it was.

The fact that they state: "We believe this coin IS OF THE PERIOD. That we do guarantee and that it is pure copper." makes me think they sent it in for slabbing and it was rejected.

that coin ain't no good. they forgot in God we trust. I have a hard time getting use to that in my types.
I know that's mint state but I won't dare guess how high. Congrads.

    Can anyone link the auction?
  • they say the coin is solid copper. and the ex owner emailed me to let him know what the grading company says about the coin.

Certainly would send it to ANACS. I bought a previously unlisted pattern once, now it's in the books. Don't see this one in A and W, Judd or Pollock. Please be sure to let us know the followup.

The coin does not appear to have been struck from the regular proof dies and there is no proof surface visable in the image. Also interesting is the lack of drapery at the elbow. Can't wait to get the verdict. Thanks for sharing.
  • I believe that I have one of those lying around here somewhere. I'll do some digging and see if I can turn it up. One thing is for sure - it's phony.
