  • ME! I am working on a Franklin Half set, I need 7 more to finish. I am also working on a Washington Quarter set, I need about 15 coins, mostly 30's dates to finish. I am also working on a 20th century type set, and only need the SLQ TY 1 to finish. I have completed a set of Roosevelts. I also get the Silver eagles each year in proof and regular strike so I guess I am doing that set too. I also dabble in Jefferson Nickles, but I don't put much effort into this set. All sets are super high quality raw, no slabs here, I want my grades to be accurate.

I'm always upgrading my type set and adding to my collection of 19th century presidential campaign medalets and Civil War tokens. I have never concentrated on just one set at any time in over 40 years of collecting.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Well of course I'm working on my NGC Registry set of toned MS Peace Dollars (55% complete), but I'm also putting together a Modern Proof Type Set (about 80% complete, once I get about 5 coins back from PCGS), a 20 th Century Proof Type Set (which may never be complete) as well as a Dancso Type Set, a 2nd Roosevelt Album Silver Set (1st one is complete of toned Roosies), and finally a BU/proof set of Kennedy Halves (45% complete)

Completed already are a 1. PCGS Set Proof Ikes, 2. Proof SBAs 3. Proof Sacs.

Oh, yeah, I have completed sets of Dansco Albums for MS & Proof Ikes and SBAs, and MS toned silver Roosies.

So I guess you're not the only one!

Complete Type Set, because each and every coin has merit, and just completed my Flying Eagle/Indian cent collection with a GD06 1877. (In looking for the 1877 it ocurred to me that although this Indian is NOT rare, or even scarce regarding availablity, the price continues to go up! It's a very collectible coin, I guess.)

I'm also in want of four more dates to complete my "Peacock Eagles" PCGS rainbow toned ASE Registry and, of course, am always looking for rainbow toned Ikes to get that Registry going. I've only found six different dates in the last 15 years of looking.

As soon as I finish a set though I have a bad habit of selling it and using those funds to support the next endeavor! Maybe the secret is to be a coin or two short on each of the remaining sets!

  • I am also collecting several different sets: PCGS FBL Franklin half set (need 5 more), NGC FB Mercury dime short set, NGC Walking Liberty half short set, SAE's and some common date MS-66 Morgans.

I am also working on several sets at the same time.

    Franklins - MS64FBL
    Walkers - MS64
    Kennedy Proofs - PR69DCAM
Ikes, and circulated Silver Washingtons, Lincolns, and IHC.

I do not think that by working on many sets, you are not concentrating on one series. Rather, I find it hard to ONLY work on one set, as a lot of the time I can not find nice pieces for a particular set. Why concentrate on only Walkers in MS64, and go to coin shows, and not find a single Walker in MS64. Might as well work on several sets at the same time, that way you will have more luck finding something to buy.

    Proof Commemorative Half Dollars (100%)
    Modern Proof Type Set (79%)
    Walker Short Set (85%
Circulation Strike Two Cent Pieces (56%)

  • I am working on:
    Washingtons
    Roosevelts
    Mercurys
    Franklins
    Type set

I rather like it that way as there is always something I can be adding or upgrading in my sets. I'm getting danger close to
finishing the Roosevelts, and the Mercurys aren't far behind. I have no idea what the result will be when I actually finish a
    set.

  • working on: MS Peace Dollars (stuck ONLY on ... you guessed it... the 1934-S); Buffs in circ condition; wheats (like everybody), and the circulating coinage of Liberia since coinage started in 1833 -- NOT the modern NCLT Star Trek and such material.

After a bit I will get back to my circ Barber halves -- nice series.

Oh, and I just bought my first twenty-cent piece. A short series (for the truly obtainable stuff) so I'll probably finish that out in the next year or two.

    Can't deny it!
Fortunately there are more coins in more series than I will ever own.
There are even more coin varieties than are known.
    Makes it fun and challenging!

Is a set EVER complete? Doesn't seem so for me. Every now and then, I'll pull out a set, look at it, and decide I don't like a few coins, and work to upgrade them. If something catches my eye, I may buy it, even if it's not part of a set.
I'm currently working on Seated Dimes actively. I'll bet very few of the coins currently in the set were there 2 years ago. I started with G/VG, then decided I wanted at least F. Now, I'm working on VF-AU, etc., etc.

Sets completed (for now), not including proof-only issues:
    Large Cents
    IHC
    Lincolns (wheaties only)
    2 cent
    3 cent silver (type 1 and 2)
    3 cent nickel
    Shield and Buffalo nickels
Barber, Merc and Roosevelt (silver only) dimes
Barber, SLQ, and Washington Qs (silver only)
    Barber, WL, and Franklin halves

I am trying to complete my sets of Franklins, WL and mercury dimes. Got a lot of holes to fill. If anyone in this forum has any of the above they would like to get rid of, drop me a line. I am liquidating my morgans, silver eagles, Roosevelt dimes and also got a lot of stuff. I do not buy, just trade. Louie

interesting to see what other folks is workin on. my own self:

US Type, Copper/Nickel/Silver, complete 1800-1964, EF-Proof, selectively upgrading, currently need a classic head large cent in Uncorroded AU, preferably an 1812.

US Type, Gold, complete 1866-1932, AU-MS, also have No Motto $5, classic $ 2.5 and $5 and Capped Bust $5 (a very very sweet 1812 in MS62 image )
seeking No Motto $10 and $20 and all pre-1808 gold types, as well as small eagle silver types, may take a while to find and/or afford these coins though image

Draped Bust quarters and half dollars 80% complete by date and 10% complete by major die variety, an ongoing project. these coins suck and you should sell any you happen to have, right away, especially R4, R5, and R6 pieces PM me for a top-dollar offer image

Capped bust halves 1807-1836 by date, 20% complete. ditto, avoid these ugly coins, buy kennedies

also have finished set of BU/proof Ike dollars, BU Franklins with proofs 55-63, seeking 50-54 and upgrades.

Peace dollars in AU-MS, 50% complete, intend to finish with respect to eye appeal first, technical grade secondary, am taking my time shopping for these.

have fun sets of VG-VF type in old 1793-present whitman albums, 60% complete and again, the early ones are the holes, am considering some gallery mint products just to fill em, and admire the designs, since any pre-1800 genuine piece purchased would be in a slab and likely stay there.

heh, now that I think about it, also lazily working on push-in whitman folders of flying eagle/indian and lincoln cents 1909-1940.

its funny, you don't realize how many projects you have going until you sit down and list them

thanks for a thought provoking thread, helps focus my collection in my mind

Liberty: Parent of Science & Industry

  • Let's see....

    - Morgan dollars...my true love....VF or better
    - Liberty nickels...VF or better raw...tougher than I thought
    - Walking Liberty halves...VG or better raw...I have a complete set but now want to start upgrading some of the questionable short set "BUs"
    - Lincoln cents up to 59 circ...took over a bunch of old Whitman folders from my dad
    - Redfield dollars...getting very pricey lately
    - Mexican Libertads 96-present...the new design
    - Chinese silver pandas
