You want to know what is stupid?

Stupid is reacting to others inflammatory posts. I am stupid. Stupid is listening to dealers who bash moderns when all they stock is "Classic" coinage. Stupid is thinking that dealers are your friends. (there are exceptions) They are here to make money and sell you what they stock, not what you want to buy. Stupid are the people who lurk like vultures waiting for an innocent remark they can twist to suit their self righteous egos. Stupid is me for posting this, but I am sick of people telling me that it is foolish to collect high grade moderns. I don't comment about your sexuality, religion, or any other personal things, I don't want your comments about my collecting habits. If you choose to do so, expect flames. I don't like any coinage after the Draped Bust coins until the 20th Century. I AM SORRY THAT I DON'T like the 19th century designs. I don't care that my PCGS MS69RED Lincoln is not worth 275 out of the slab. JUST SHUT UP and leave it alone. mdwoods (going psycho)

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
If I may suggest, respectfully: take a break. Go pet your dog or play with your kids. Go do something recreational that isn't numismatic (or collectibles) in nature. There has been a lot of pi$$ and vinegar on the boards of late, and it makes perfect sense if we need to step back from time to time.
No offense intended. Really.
Stupid is thinking that dealers are your friends.
This is a truism, but is not limited to dealers. It applies to people in general. However, just like I can make friends with collectors, so can I with dealers -- because dealers are people too. It is true that most of my friends in the coin biz/hobby are collectors than dealers, but that is because I'm a collector and I have more in common with the collector mentality.
But, I can think of a few dealers in whom I have more trust than some of the so-called friendly collector acquaintainces I've made over the years.

EVP

Mark: If the attacks were well balanced, I would feel differently as well. For example, I wonder if Stuart's 1919(p) Lincoln Cent in PCGS-MS69RD is worth the same money in a flip?
Hey, I passed on buying a exceedingly rare PCGS-PR69 Barber quarter at FUN in the auction, because I personally felt the coin wouldn't be worth nearly as much out of that holder. Mark, check out the scans from the Heritage archives on that coin that just sold at FUN. Nothing personal against that quarter - same argument as one could make about a 1999 Lincoln cent in PCGS-MS69

Collect whatever coins you want, slabbed, unslabbed or out of your pocket its ok.
Pick a dealer that carries the type of coins you like in the grades you like.
Pick dealers with whom you can have a friendly and professional relationship with.
Always sell a few coins every year to check if you are buying and paying for the proper quality of coins.
View your collecting as a hobby, but when you start holding appreciable value of coins, then exert
reasonable and prudent concern for values and resale potential.
If you purchase a slabbed coin, stay with the two main companies and then grade the coin yourself
to see if it has detremental faults. When you go to sell that coin, better believe that the buyer will
spot every flaw, carbon spot, milk spot, scratch and lack of surface luster on MS coins.
Respect another persons legitimate opinions and views on collecting.
If you must disagree, please do so without becoming disagreable.
Always remember, this hobby , to most of us,is supposed to be a relaxing and entertaining pastime.
If a dealer comes on the Forum to share their knowledge and experience with us in a professional
manner, treat them with the respect and cordiality they are due.
Finally, observe the golden rule, treat others as you wish to be treated.
Finally ignore Trolls as best you can, they usually get bored by such treatment and go away.
You all have a nice Sunday and hope we have a nice story to read by the Great Bard Clankeye
on Monday morning. As an after thought, if you make money from your hobby, thats great. Dont ever
be embarrassed by the fact that you are a wise and nimble collector.

As I write this from the Numismatic Nut House (ok, I'm actually dictating it to an orderly due to the straight-jacket), I can feel your pain. I also collect so-called "modern coins", and a bunch of other stuff besides. In fact, my wife committed me to this fine institution due to my collecting psychosis. The final straw was when I attempted to bid on some rare, graded barbed-wire on eBay. That's the last I saw of her (and my collection). There's no hope. But, there's some solace that I share with my fellow collector-patients as I listen to their loud ravings about "raw", "classic", "neo-modern", etc. There's a special room, though, that's reserved only for slabbers. I'm afraid I'll wind up in there soon, as my collection has some of those too.
Is everyone getting cabin-fever on these forums? Only those of us in the Northern Tier (tundra) should be able to claim that. We have over 2 feet of snow still on the ground and my wife has a meat cleaver in her hand. Gotta run to my den before she catches me.....

Yesterday I couldn't have handled this non-derogatory remark. Today I wonder how you can judge my Lincoln without seeing it. It looks like a MS-70 to me. I paid a bit more than 275, and I don't regret it one bit. I have a nearly perfect Lincoln cent. I do play the Registry game in my Modern Type set. However I have accumulated some of the finest examples minted of particular types. Some of my favorite coins are not slabbed, and never will be slabbed. Please don't try to push me into one little category. My collecting habits are not that simple and I should not have to defend myself for what I choose to collect. It is no secret that you love to slam slabbing in general. Why bother? I don't slab your raw coins, it would never enter my mind to do so. mdwoods
