Should opionions on contraversial subjects in the hobby be left in pm's only ?

Dipped-vs-toned, slabed-vs-raw, modern-vs-classic, red copper toning in the slab, dealer profit margins, accuracey of sheet pricing, dare i mention "done deals" When i read posts on these subjects and many more like them, i find the discussion informative and educational relating to dealer and collector experiences. As long as the thread refrains from smart ass remarks not intended as jokes but personal putdowns.

The word troll is used way to much around here to silence differences of opionion. I value differences of opionion in this hobby because i like to learn how others feel on a given subject in any area of coin collecting. If we can feel free to disagree with the intention of learning and yes provoking opinion to see others points of view [maybe with some humor] but not with badmouthing and name calling. Thats not trolling and we might even learn to appreciate others points of view.

I have not always agreed with Mark, or Truth Teller, but i sure appreciate the way they can bring up subjects to provoke conversation in the hobby without trying to diss anyone. I respect both of them for that and always read there posts even when we don't agree. barberlover [keep the good thoughts coming guys]

  • Definitely not! Controversial subjects CAN be discussed by adults in a calm manner. Differences of opinion CAN be aired without slashing, bashing and name-calling. Adults CAN choose to act like adults. Or, they can choose to act immature. Usually those that attack personally and call names don't have anything MEANINGFUL to add to the discussion, so they go on the attack and call names. We, collectively, need to be intolerent of that kind of behavior. It is OK to disagree. It is not OK to attack and ridicule.

I have certainly learned more from posts that disagree with my view than the ones that I agree with, so I welcome all different viewpoints. But not everyone seems to be able to discuss topics without bringing personal issues into it. Even so, I don't feel compelled to respond in the same way. It takes (at least) two to have a flame war.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Yes it's fine to disagree it's when you start calling people immature and stupid because you don't like what they post or have no sence of humor that you should use pm's.

Outhaul, i'd define controversial as a subject with strong disagrement on both sides of an issue. A good example might be slabbing coins versus purists who beleive slabbing is entombing a coin or people who only like blast white while others only like toned coins many people have strong opionions on both sides of issues like that.

I learn much more from controversial posts than I do from those where everyone is in agreement.

  • I might not always be right, but Im never wrong! PUT EM UP! Dont give up, eventually everyone learns to get along. Lots of divorced couples find, after they split, that they get along better than they thought. Over time, you learn alot about how to communicate. No two people get along all the time, you learn to agree to dissagree. DONT LEAVE AND LET ALL THIS ARGUING GO TO WASTE!

the name-calling is NOT a bad thing!!! allowing folks to talk/write like they normally would allows their true personality to be seen, which is valuable to interaction! i like the honesty that results from allowing folks to state exactly whatever they want to state, however they want to state it. it is the single most important factor in America's greatness (freedom of speech). PLEASE put aside any notion of ever restricting freedom!

This forum has a remarkable presence of knowledgeable collectors and dealers. The discussions that take place on this forum should be useful and constructive. In all situations they should be civil and thoughtful of the sensitivities of the other board members. Differences of opinion should be encouraged; however, efforts to provoke and insult do not reflect well on our hobby, discipline or business. In many instances, the rude and intolerant dialogues that capture the space of the US Coin Forum would not take place if the two people were talking face to face. In a significant but minority of the posts the anonymity of the platform encourages irresponsible behavior. I personally PM members when I have a view that might be misinterpreted in a negative way or when the comment is personal and not useful to the general members.
