Parsippany, NJ Coin show report

The 80-100 dealer monthly Parsippany was very, very busy this month - so busy in fact that one dealer had to set up in the hallway outside the show! It seemed a little harder to get down the aisles this month than last month.
The show was such a crush that I didn't get a chance to meet Mr. Kelso (see his post on his new purchases). Maybe next month!
I talked to TomB, who was walking the floor as his table-partner is trying something else. I also talked to a couple of dealers who said that it was hard to buy coins at FUN at Grey Sheet Bid, that the sellers were expecting prices to go up and therefore would rather hold their coins than sell them at what might be a too-low price.
I saw a lot of dealers buying today, including several who I usually see as sellers at White Plains. Frankly, it's beginning to look like Parsippany is on the way up and White Plains is on the way down. I saw a lot of checks changing hands between dealers.
I saw several new dealers today, including one who had a stunning 1865 eagle Pattern in copper (PCGS PF-64 Brown) O-mi-god! (as the 14-year olds say). He had three or four other really nice patterns, as well. He also had a PCGS-30 1850-O dollar and a PCGS-45 1842-O half. These were both on older green label holders. He seemed to have a lot of older PCGS-slabbed coins.
I saw a dealer buy a to-die-for MS-63 red/brown 1773 Virginia halfpenny; also saw a beautiful MS-63(?) Woods Hibernia farthing and an NGC-61 1810 half eagle (It's very unusual to see old tenor gold at Parsippany).
I even had a coin bought out from under me! I saw a nice NGC-45 1856-S half eagle for a decent price, told the dealer I would think about it, and when I came back it had been sold. (Now I know it's a good coin market! Usually, I see a coin I like and the dealer still has it four hours or four weeks later.)
Otherwise, I saw six or seven no-motto Coronet eagles, almost all of which I had seen last week in White Plains or last month in Parsippany. I think I only saw one piece of O-mint gold, a PCGS-55 1851-O eagle that I had also seen in November. I don't recall seeing more than one or two no-motto Coronet half eagles, though.
All-in-all, it was a great show, even though I didn't buy anything! (That just means I'll have more money for next month.)

More like, "well, Oh MIGOD! That like did not like just happen!" (normally in reference to a hair or makeup disaster (such as one strand of hair not sticking with the gel (
Wish I was there

I stopped to say Hello to the folks at Roxbury Coin and also ran into Don Ferrante an old friend. Ran into a couple other friends that i have not seen in many years, every one getting back into the game.
I was mostly shoulder to shoulder with other collectors as i rounded the tables. The folks in the front entrance selling books and other items had the Tasco lens that i have been looking for. I purchased one and for some reason everyone came over and next thing i know he sold them all. I was standing there looking at my watch dial with the lens and others came over to look at my watch and said Oh wow thats great. LOL
I looked over some books and then went back in and found a few coins that i posted pic's of in another post that i believe you took a look at.
I will try to hook up with you at the next show. I will be going to the smaller Clifton coin and currency show next.
PS the lady in the wheel chair ran over my Toe, Didn't hurt but it was funny.

First lets get something straight. It was sooo busy I was barely able to make contact with anyone let alone shmooze with some board members. Why it took at least 5 minutes to walk down any aisle. I do not recall any other show with so many people. Sheez....however how was I supposed to know who is a board member, I recommend mandatory name cards with logos in color.
I came looking for some nice PCGS Mercs and was succesful with only a few finds. One was at Roxbury's where Papa Ferrante ok ok Albert Ferrante had some nice coins (too bad some of the good stuff sold earlier) but I understand most disappeared into dealers hands early on. I heard from many that big time dealers roamed the floors early on...hmm so much for far outta the city events
I was lucky to purchase a gorgous monster toned 1945-S PCGS MS-66FB, I was shooting for a 67 but the toning bought me right there. That was from a true gentleman named Lou Pearlman as you walk in left against the wall, very patient cordial and a pleasure to work with.
Which reminds me whats missing in these shows are signs stating who's who! I have no patience asking everyone who they are. Why can't they just have a board or sign, even school paper taped up would be fine. It a loss for the dealers!!!!!!!Business cards? well maybe 3 dealers had those out, out off 70+, oh well, again your loss!
Another table had Tom K of Gold Silver Coin in Franklin. OH MIGOSH, he showed me a 1916-D PCGS 64FB he was asking 50K because IHHO this coin is a 65. I checked it out quckly, he's right that coin is definently a 65. I blamed this non-purchase on my wife
He also showed me a 1795 $1 PCGS AU-55 with a price somewhere in low 6 figures. What a beauty, gorgous toned, strong strike. He started stating maybe it would grade higher, and I shut him up quick with listen I'm a grading nut myself, and that is exactly that... a 55, maybe PQ indeed , be happy. He smiled and thanked everyone around the table that his wife is not around today
I should mention there where very few LucyBops out there in the aisles. Hmm wonder why?
Another pointer for you dealers, If I hadn't nudged Tom K or walked by when someone else was looking at a high end piece I would have not known he had those beauties. Fine I did not buy today, but I'll know he's got some goodies when I do! I know many dealers stash the good stuff behind them..........
Mr Kelso thanks for starting the run on those Tasco's, nope he had none left. I did finally pick up an OTT light. That supplies guy in the hall and anteroom was very very busy, claims he'll be there again...well no kidding, it only took about 5 minutes on line to pay
Dave not sure if I would have found you in the throngs, but thanks!
Marc
Glad you made it and had a good time!
I agree, the show was way too crowded to meet anyone. Maybe next time we can arrange a meeting time and place.
Actually, the dealers do have signs. Unfortunately, they hang off the front of the table, just where you can't see them in the crowd!
As far as business cards go, many of the bigger dealers have them, but the guys who just do shows don't - You'll just have to keep coming back!
I'm glad Harco (the supplies dealer) is happy. I order most of my supplies and books by mail, but it's nice to browse and pick something up in person, too.
Yes, the Ferrante's do put on the show. While I think they're happy with the show, I have heard more than a couple of dealers complain (vigorously) about the way they put on the show. (If you think the folks on this board are cranky, wait 'till you hear a coin dealer complain in person!)

As DaveG stated, my table partner is taking some time off so I walked the floor at this show, but not for long! I had three other dealers ask me to share a table with them for today and in the future. During the afternoon I parked at Steve Sabatino's table (SLQ Coins) and I might set up with him next month. TomK also came to Steve's table and brought the gems that Marc already wrote about. Oddly enough, TomK's 1795 dollar is a near match to mine, however, mine is a VF20. I was able to buy four nice coins and felt very good about the day.
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
I wanted to sleep in this morning!!
Maybe I will show up at one of the monthly shows soon.
It was standing there looking at my watch face that did it.
