I'm not too suprised. I've started a 76 set on the registry (not a high priority, but I still buy cards when the price is right). I've noticed that a number of the commons are going for over 2X SMR. Additionally, the pop report is still pretty low for a lot of the commons that show up on E-Bay.
Granted, there is probably tons of unopened and ungraded material out there, but the 70s seem to have taken of price-wise since the Set Registry specials were put in place.
I am probably just mildly surprised. As far as the 76s, it seemed just a few years ago you would be able to regularly pick up vending boxes. Not anymore. Having opened a couple of vending boxes myself, I note from first hand experience that a large number of the cards will not even qualify for PSA 9s or higher. Terrible, terrible quality control. While the availability of 76s in high grade will always be more plentiful then say 52 Topps, I can see some rarity (albeit modest) in high grade 76s.
1976 is the new 1975. It will never be as popular, but there is good growth potential. As the popularity of completing PSA graded sets increases, and as time goes by more sets reach their 20th or 25th birthdays, there's bound to be growth in all those currently under-collected sets. A year ago when I was starting the 1975 set, there just weren't many commons graded. I think in Feb 2002 I counted only about 450 of the 660 cards had even one example graded, and many that did had only one. So you saw a lot of cards that now sell for $6 in an 8 selling for $15-$20 or more because they were 1/1, 1/2. The low supply was coupled with a few motivated buyers who wanted to compete and pay that much. I don't have a Pop report subscription anymore but last time I checked it looked like a similar case for all the Topps sets from the 2nd half of the 70s.

I agree with Jeff. I would GLADLY pay $20 each for the '76 Reds commons I still need. I'm also looking for a few LL cards from that set (lost out on 2 last night). Feel free to PM or e-mail me if anyone has any they're looking to sell.
I have a couple of 9's in my set and I think I paid about 15 dollars each but for the most part 8's are fine by me. I actually started my set with a few psa 7's I picked up on ebay for a dollar each. I will one day upgrade them but I have those to blame for this journey.

Nothing on ebay
At those prices maybe I ought to list them. I think $20 if very reasonable for common 9's.
