Morgans and Toners - Help Identify Toning Patterns if you would....

Here are some Morgans that I'm trying to classify into the different pattern schemes and I was wondering if you agreed, disagreed, and your comments.

Thanks!

Frank

#1 - Album or Envelope?

#2 - End Roll

#3 - Bag or Rainbow or does it matter? The color sequence is yellow/blue/yellow

#4 - End Roll

#5 - Bag

#6 - Album?

#7 - Looks like an Album - but it actually has angles, so I'm thinking End Roll

#8 - Crescent

#9 - Envelope or Album?

  • I agree with what you have said about the toning.

    Added comments:

    #1) I would guess it`s an envelope.
#3) I don`t know. I would lean on the side of bag. It`s a heavy-duty guess on my part.
    #9) I would guess album.

#1 and #9 guess` are because the toning on #1 is largely, and evenly, monochromatic. #9 because it goes from dark to light. On album toning, I would imagine, You don`t really know where it`s going to start. Once it does, it spreads outwards with the darker areas where the toning started. I`m assuming that is how it goes on the album toning.

    Frank,

    #6 - Bag toning
    #7 - Probably end roll
    #9 - Probably envelope

I think the others are all accurate described.

When discussing toned Morgans, I like to use three basic types of toning:

    1) Album/envelope
    2) Mint Bag
    3) End roll

I lump album/envelope together because it many cases it's almost impossible to discern the difference.

For color patterns, I typically describe the following:

    1) Monochromatic
    2) Polychromatic
    3) Target
    4) Rainbow
    5) Textile

Some folks add crescent and that's a valid pattern as well.

    Thanks!

    P.S. Good thread Frank!

As GSAGUY stated most times it is hard to distinguish between envelope and album tone, but in many cases you will find that the rim and edge of a envelope toned coin will tone in a light Iridescence with the centers of the coin a darker tone, as the edge of the coin has no contact with the envelope. Your album toned coin will show the deepest toning at the edge because of direct contact with the coin punch out.
If It doesn't have great eye appeal, I don't want it.

The Binion coins certainly had some 'interesting' toning. I've seen colors on some of those coins that I don't typically see on most bag-toned Morgans. I think (though I'm not positive) that many of the Binion coins were stored in some type of cloth bags.

I think you're pretty much right on except for #6 which is bag tone and #9 would be album tone because you can see the fingerprint where the person used his fat greasy thumb to push the coin into the hole.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Not that I'm aware of Eagle - that's why the input from board members on this subject is so valuable - if anyone knows a good source of info on this subject (there are some on the internet) please post them!

    Thanks!

I remember reading a while back that Binion also hoarded can peaches and that some of the cases leaked. I wonder if the juice contamination may have caused some of the toning.

I believe you have the Binion hoard mixed up with the Redfield hoard
