I have been collecting sports cards since the late 70's early 80's. My first set I collected was the 79 topps! I still have some unopened rack packs+wax boxes from 1979 in my collection. A couple of 82 fleer, donruss, topps sets (ripken). Some 85 topps wax boxes and rack packs(Big Mac + Clemens) I stopped collecting in the late 80's and started back up in 2000 (I guess when the game used era started and now the market is totally saturated). I started reading this message board several months ago and wanted to do a psa set. At first I was a "sponge" meaning I gathered+ absorbed the knowledge from all of you(there is a lot out there). At first I was going to start w/ the set I was most familar with, the 79 topps but it is huge(726 cards)! To make a long story short I ended up doing the 2001 UD Sweet Spot Baseball set (Ichiro's 1st #'d rookie along w/ Pujols, Prior and Teixeira rc's) my goal is all psa 10's. It has been pretty challenging so far! I have been buying singles on ebay and grading them. My eyes have been educated on this set w/ early pit falls and learning curves. The set has 150 cards. 1-60 commons 60-90 short print RC's # d to 1000 (seeded 1 rc per box). Then the rookie update came out 90-120 commons 120-150 short print RC's #'d to 1500. I have been grading the sp's only and have all of them at least graded and now I am upgrading them to all psa 10's (I have 25 out of the 60 sp RC's the rest 8+9's).
I thank you for reading my history and hope I am welcomed!

Welcome to the board and registry!!! That is a very tough set you are building, any plans for building a vintage set?

"There's no crying in baseball card set building."
After my 2001 set I think I will try a vintage set in the future- undecided at this time- maybe an 1956 topps, the reasoning behind the 56 topps set. I have one card from that set I bought when I was 9 yrs old at a flea market for 50.00 (I used my birthday money that I received that year and remember my father saying I can buy anything i wanted) its probably more the experience then the set. It was card #135 Mickey Mantle- At best a PSA 5!!
Welcome to the party. You have now entered a VERY ADDICTIVE hobby!!!!

Hi Derek,
Welcome to the boards!! I have started the 56 set myself about 2 months ago.How about giving me about 6 months before you start the set. There are 51 sets on the 56 set registry. You will find an enormous amount of knowledge as well as some guys with a great sense of humor.

Welcome to the boards! It's a great place as I am sure you have gathered from reading these past few months. One word of advice: enable your PMs and make a profile visible. This will let other members contact you and will open the doors for many deals to be made.

Good luck with the modern set.
I'll have to say though, I'm always against grading my modern RCs (post 1998). Just doesn't seem necessary unless you think it has a shot at a 10. A 9 pretty much gets you book value on eBay anyways, so you're out the grading fee. As far as authenticity, I haven't heard any stories of anyone counterfeiting anything post 1998.
Of course, the chase is always more fun than owning, so if you happen to complete this in PSA 10, man, that's gonna get you one pretty penny!!
726 cards is a ton for a set, so I'd start with something smaller than the 1979 set.
Good luck!
Andy
