Given all debris belongs to the federal gov't, I don't think we'll see any for sale in public. It would be a nice jesture if the gov't would or could return a small item to people who identify debris found on their proerty after the investigation is complete.
That, along with the following, which will surely happen:
1. Every piece of junk found from Fort Worth to Lafayette for the next year will be reported as a piece of the shuttle regardless of whether it really is. 2. Within a week people will try running shuttle debris for auction on eBay....most of it scrap metal having nothing to do with the actual shuttle. 3. A number of companies nationwide will think up some stupid momento to profit from. 4. Someone will likely either be badly hurt or killed trying to tamper with pieces they find even though all the news channels are telling them to leave the pieces alone. 5. Someone, somewhere will have to blame someone for this...whether it be the Palestinians or Pres. Bush. It's just the nature of our declining society to sensationalize as much as possible and bring complete falsehood into everything they can.

Which will, of course, result in a phalanx of slimeball PI lawyers jockeying for position to be the first to file suit.
30 minutes after the disaster there were 26 items up for bid on EBAY form patches to beer mugs, they lasted 15 minutes until EBAY pulled and banned all items related to the Shuttle or mission. Hopefully they will continue this policy.
been riveted to the tv all day. i was 1 of those typical kids fascinated w/ nasa & space exploration in the 60's, & remember the space race very distinctly. i also remember the challenger disaster very well. today is a day that will not soon be forgotten, & we as a family observed a moment of silence before dinner.
let's just all be thankful that there are so many folks w/ courage & vision, willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the advancement of science. it sure puts a lot of our petty complaints & arguments in perspective.

I just checked and there are a lot of newly listed items.
What eBay has banned is the sale of debris. I'm sure eBay will allow it if the govt didn't claim ownership to it.
We talk about slimeball sellers, but what about slimeball buyers? It seems to me that those who support and bid up the prices of coins/items that are disaster related are also sick! Here is an eBay example. Note the biddding started today - the guy listed the coin on January 25th.
According to a friend of mine who works for EBAY, this add did not exploit the disaster as the earlier items that EBAY pulled. EBAY is watching for these items. It is still in very bad taste though. Some people will buy anything, there is alot of other coins I could buy for $5K.
The coin was listed on Jan 25th. Unless the seller had something to do with bringing down Columbia he is guilty of nothing.
Don't want to bring this to the top but the thread was about slimeball sellers. Then a link was posted about a 'Columbia Death Coin' on ebay. In this case it was slimeball bidders but please read the whole thread.
I have to believe this bidder was making a point, whether justified or not. The seller is obviously innocent, and I suspect he may have a hard time collecting on this one. Human nature sucks sometimes.

You might want to take note of the fact that nobody accused that seller of anything. It's the bidders that are disgusting. Most likely thinking they can turn a quick buck.
When my grandpa sold all his coins (before I started collecting) my dad bought from him the commememorative coins he had. I have lots like elvis ones, war ones, space shuttle discovery one and a space shuttle columbia one. $5 coin. I attached some photos. I would never auction this off to make a buck from such a tragedy. Some people will do anything to make a buck. It's a neat coin though.
I got that spam e-mail too. I like how they called is a "U S Mint Commemorative silver dollar" in the title, "Space Shuttle Columbia Official US coin" at the top of the ad, and in the body of the ad the describe it as being a "Commemorative Shuttle Columbia US Mint 1 ounce Silver dollar". Hmmm looks like a colorized Ike dollar to me. Whan did they make them out of an oz of silver? Heck when did they make them out of an oz of anything? I've seen these guys skate pretty close to the edge of fraud before but I think this time they have stepped over the line.

No - this thread is tounge in cheek.
Bad taste would be actually profiting off of a disaster.

I never made any reference to the seller as having done anything wrong. The whole point of my post was the "buyer pathology". Please read the post.

Well, it took 36 days from the accident for my non-coin email address to get spam trying to sell me a space shuttle commem coin.
