Bought some rolls of Lincolns - questions

1 Did I get good prices???
2 Any interesting varieties I should look for???

I basically stopped bringing any sort of price guide (pointless)

I bought:
one roll 1950-D $22.00
one roll 1953-S $16.00
two rolls 1954-S $12.00 each
one roll 1956-D $6.00
two rolls 1957-D $5.00 each
two rolls 1958 $5.00 each
three rolls 1958-D $5.50 each
1959, 1960-D, 1969-D, 1969-S (two), 1970-D, 1972-D, 1974-D $1.00 each

All of them BU red, most of them in plastic tubes.

Thank you

  • Coins in plastic tubes, for the most part, have already been searched for dates and varieties. Not to say that you overpaid, or will find nothing, but I always look for OBW ( original bank wrapped ) rolls.

First, you paid between bid and ask for the rolls, not bad at all. That's the range I pay for wheat rolls.

Second, it is complete falsehood that tubed rolls have mostly been searched. I've been buying and searching rolls for over 15 years and have better luck with the tubed rolls than with OBW rolls.

Third, there are a plethera of die varieties to be found for all the dates you listed...far too many to sit here and list for you. In most of the dates you mentioned there are over a dozen different RPMs and doubled dies per date. Of special note would be 1956D in which there are a number of mint mark varieties that bring at least $25 each in BU.

74-D cents include one of my favorite varieties- - a small date. It is not rare
in the least but doesn't appear in mint sets so nice examples aren't easy to find.

The small date 1974 Lincoln cents are on all business strike specimens to include all mints. The only 1974 cent that does not come in both versions is the proof - all are large date.

  • For anyone who's interested who does not know, the difference between the 1974 large date and small date is the distance of the date from the border (rim.) On the small date, the date is a little further away from the rim than on the large date. image
  • Forgot to add this: I think the terms "large" and "small" dates for the 1974 Lincoln cents are not accurate descriptions, because there is really no difference in the size of the dates, only the placement from the rim. The more accurate description should be "near" and "far" dates, similar to the 1979 SBA's. image

Rich I'll let you know when I get to the roll. Right now my eyes hurt too much from looking at them. I have a nice package of 20 of them that will be shipped to PCGS tomorrow image
