Looks like a very porous half cent to me. The date does look to be 1803 though. The large cent of that date doesn't have a "pole cap," does it? OR is that just a mushy, but huge "bow"? I just can't tell anymore.
I guess that is a bow, the more I look at it; in which case, it more than likely is the cend denomination.
Wow,Just think.That coin probably had been in the ground two or thee times longer than you,ve been alive before it was metal-detected. Thats a nice find no matter how much corrosion.You still know what it is and can just barely make out a date. Now thats a coin with character.

How about a 1800, 80 over 79 or 1800 over 1798 large cent?

Yep, it's an 1803 Half Cent - or at least it was at one time. Just something I ran across and it was hardly reconizable.
It sold for $10.50 though.
