Various D mintmarks on 1938 Buff Nickels

I recently decided to use the microscope on some interesting mintmark variations. So I pulled out a 1938D, a 1938D over S and a 1938D over D. All of these are attached below for your review.

I find it extremely interesting looking at dates, mintmarks and other fine features on coins such as split bands on Mercs and bell lines on Frankies.

The D mintmark on the 1938 Buff is an interesting one since there are many variations. I may make a point of collecting many more of these. The D/D is pretty obvious, the D/S seems almost more of a filled D, but I guess it could also be the center part of an S in the middle of a D.

there are 4 or 5 versions of the d/s I think. the main one is Very easy to see! That one in your pic might be Omm4. I think OMM1 is actually a D/D/D/S

I've got one that is in a D/D slab but when I look under the scope it looks like a D/D/D - am waiting for the Treasure Hunting Buffalo book to see what version I have. Beautiful luster in an NGC MS67 slabimage
