Awesome safety deposit box improvement

Thought I would share this. My bank has numerous branches in town, but the closest one with a safe deposit box is about 10 miles away. With traffic, it is at least a 20 minute drive so shuttling the coins around is a pain. When at the bank, it is a very manual process where you wait up to 30 minutes for an available employee to get you access to the box.

A new branch opened up about 2 miles from my house, and as luck would have it they have a safe with deposit boxes. (Many branches do not). They implemented a cool new technology. Instead of checking your signature, they use a biometric hand scanner for ID. This means I can walk into the bank and go straight to the vault with no waiting. When combined with the closer branch, it cuts my complete turnaround time from about 1 1/4 hours to 15 minutes.

Unfortunately I am still restricted to access during bank hours. An even better solution would be to put the vault access inside the outer doors so that I can get to my belongings 24 hrs/day. If they can do that, there would be no reason to get a home safe at all. Even still, this is a great improvement, saves time for me and bank employees.

Commerce Bank came here a year or two ago. They do offer very convenient hours, including weekends. Interestingly, none of the other banks in the area have followed their lead, so I guess they haven't drawn enough business for the "banking hours" banks.

would you consider this safe? i'm thinking this would be a haven for thieves. if i were a thief i'm thinking a good place to hang out would be across the street from the all-night safe deposit boxes.

  • If you'll pardon my nosiness, what do they charge for a box? Here in NY I pay $35. a year for their smallest. Twowood image

A few answers - It is Bank of America and I am located in Texas. I was surprised by the new technology as I have not seen that before.

They charge $20 for the smallest. I pay $50/yr for a 5" by 10" box ($70 normally but I get a preferred customer discount). It holds 8 PCGS boxes plus all of my personal papers.
