Does anyone know the provenance or have any comments on the 1848 CAL Quarter Eagle now listed on the Whitlow website:

1848 CAL

You don't see these historically interesting coins on the market very often.

Just curious. What price did Whitlow quote you or anyone else who asked? It is listed as Price on Request. Seems like this would be an easy coin to counterfit by just adding "CAL." Also also curious if there are any unique features besides the word "CAL" to look for?

Those are very interesting coins. The gold was from the start of the California gold rush and the CAL stamp was added by hand while the coins were still in the die.

Since there were just a little over 1,000 made, I would expect (I don't have any references to check) that there was probably only one set of dies used, and one counterstamp, and that would provide sufficient diagnostics to confirm authenticity.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Yes, there are diagnostic traits which allow these to be correctly authenticated. Given that this is in a PCGS holder, I think you are safe.

This would be an awesome coin to own. Great history.

The most commonly referred to characteristic is that the period after CAL is square. Of course, that would also be easy to counterfeit, but most counterfeiters miss that.

This is a coin board. Please post the detailed information on the coin. For folks who don't want to read, they can skip it. For people like me who are interested, they can read and save it to their heart's content.

It looks like the coin sold quickly?! It is no longer listed!
