What would you do if you said "no PayPal" and they did it anyway??

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,413 ✭✭✭✭✭
I find it really irritating when that happens. Would you refund the money? Leave less than stellar feedback? Keep the money and the coin??image Boy, am I tempted to do the later. I wonder if the PCGS forum is banned in jail??

Anyway, if you've had this experience, help me out.

Refuse the sale and send them an e-mail. If you don't take it, then you don't take it. They can't force you to.

Just send em the coin, and if they paid promptly, I would leave them a positive feedback... There is a certian seller who had blocked me from bidding cause he refuses to accept my good credit card.

I would reject the payment and email them. It's their responsibility to see what payment terms are expected. You're not responsible for their failure to read. But be nice about it. image

  • That's happened to me twice in the past week (well, sort of). I'm usually fanatical about putting all of my coin purchases on one credit card, so I have a "back-up" ledger of what I spent (I DO bend this rule when buying from "friends," forum members, or if I see a coin I just have to have).

Anyway, twice this week, I sent payment via the credit card through PayPal, then got emails back saying, "Sorry, I can't take credit cards, so I've declined your payment. Please send MO or PayPal transfer." II checked at PayPal, and sure enought, they had declined, so I had no problems going their preferred route. Give it a shot.

  • Even though you said no paypal, if paypal inserts their "pay now" in your auctions, it could have led to the confusion.

Ship them a different coin, since they didn't look at the listing.image

Just kidding. I'd ship the coin and leave positive feedback. If they act in good faith trying to complete the transaction, I won't b.tch about how they pay. JMO

Go to your PayPal account and either 'reject' or 'refund' their payment. Tell them that you don't accept PayPal.

simple refuse the money and send it back.....you should also not take paypal unless shipping the itemsto a a confirmed address! that is the only protection that you have in case it is a stolen credit card!

Back when I did not accept PayPal at all, this used to happen. I'd decline the payment and eMail the bidder. Then, after I started accepting PayPal, but NO CREDIT CARDS (clearly stated in the auction description) I was getting people paying by credit card. I'd decline the payment and eMail the bidder.

  • I wouldn't miss it but if you look in the payment details, there you have the Paypal logo with half a dozen credit cards listed. It could be conflicting to some... not me of course.

If you stated in your auction that you don't accept paypal, then simply e-mail the buyer and let them know that because of the added cost you do not accept it and that it was stated so in your auction.

Thank him, refund his money via paypal and wait for his/her check or M/O to come.

Happened to me just last week on a $320.00 coin. Paypal would have eaten $10.00, and I had stated that Paypal was not an option. Buyer was very flexible and mailed off a check promptly.

Russ, you don't accept credit cards thru PayPal? Why didn't you say so?

Lots of blind people use eBay. So far with my recent auctions, I've had two people send payment, but not the stated $2 for shipping. Several more have asked for my address, even though it is listed in the end of auction email to them. image

    Dave,

Unfortunately, those credit card logos are there by default. eBay sticks them in there if you want to provide the ability for the buyer to just click the link and pay.

So, Russ: does this mean you DO take credit cards now??image
  • Yeah Russ, You take credit cards now? Thanks for letting me know image

...I was unaware ebay inserts those. There was a time when I went on Paypal and I screen prompted me if I wanted to automatically insert the logo in every auction. I would think there would be a way to turn it off or specify not to take credit cards.... although I haven't tinkered around with ebay or paypal in a long time.

Most likely the reason the buyer sent you money by PayPal was to speed up the process. If you accept credit cards directly then offer that option to the buyer so he doesn't have to wait a week or more for you to get the item into the mail. Otherwise my suggestion would be to request the buyer to send you by PayPal the additional cost to you if your reason for not taking PayPal is just to save on having to pay extra fees. As a buyer I usually skip bidding on ebay auctions that don't take PayPal, especially if another seller has the same thing and does take PayPal. I know I'd be more than willing to pay the seller his extra fees rather than have to go through the time consuming process of running down to the post office to get a money order and then having to wait at least an extra week to get the item sent from the seller.

As seller I had exactly this problem in some recent e-bay auctions. I had stated in the listing I accepted non-credit card funded Paypal. I also checked Paypal as a payment option. I didn't realized it would build a way for people to pay by paypal into my auction result, and alllow them to send credit card funded paypal to my personal account. Even when I hit accept, Paypal wanted me to upgrade my account. No thanks... losing another $1+ from a low margin sale just won't cut it. I hit decline and e-mailed the bidders... two of three have paid the right way so far.

Needless to say I never select the Paypal payment option when I create my auctions anymore.

  • Accepting Paypal can dramatically improve the final selling price, why wouldnt you accept it? When someone can use credit, they will place a bid when maybe they would not have for lack of cash! If you do not accept credit, your losing 40% of your business!

If they have it coming from a checking account its practically free!

I normally do, but when the starting price (and likely selling price) is at cost, I opt out. I like to lose money but find I can't do it too often. image

Not only that, but the buyer has some protection. I'm frequently willing to bid higher or even bid at all if the seller accepts credit cards thru PayPal. I know I have some recourse if I get screwed.

gmarguli - agree - I like to buy with paypal/visa for the same reason. Have gotten my money back 3 times from VISA when the seller wouldn't/couldn't refund my money. image

  • I recently bought a cheap Lincoln cent from a guy using PayPal. PayPal listed the payment as unclaimed, even though the guy got the e-mail confirming the payment. We hassled with PayPal for two days before I finally canceled the payment and sent him a check. Their system gets screwier every single day.

Paypal sends me a notice everytime I win an auction wether or not the seller accepts Paypal. Before I realized this I assumed these emails were being sent by the sellers. This practice is quite misleading by Paypal and led me to pay at least 2 sellers when they did not accept Paypal. Obviously I was not trying to piss off the sellers, but when you win 20 or 30 auctions in a two day period it can be a bit confusing who is doing what and just getting everyone paid is my main concern.

As to what to do, the only right thing to do is refund the payment with a message that you do not accept Paypal.

When you sign up for a PayPal account, it lets you set up auction data. A lot of casual sellers forget that they set this up and have not deactivated it.
