OT -- CA sales tax, Internet tax

I'm sorry that this is somewhat off topic for coins. But I would like to buy and sell coins with people who live in California without paying sales tax.

I collected sales tax on CA sales last year. I just sent my small sum in to the State Board of Equalization along with a tax form just this past Monday.

Then I read in today's San Jose Mercury News that our governor might back an Internet sales tax. Mercury News article That implies that there is currently no sales tax on internet sales!!!!

I would love to stop collecting it. I would get more bids from Californians. I could simplify my bookkeeping.

Does anybody know what the story is? I'm not sure how I would fill out this tax form if I don't have to collect sales tax.

  • As a San Diegan...all I know is any time I buy something from any "established" dealer type in CA on the internet, I'm paying tax.

    Carl,

You should check with the Board of Equalization but I believe that you may have to collect sales tax only from California residents, so that the tax would not apply if you are shipping coins out of state..

  • The internet tax he is talking about pertains to taxing sales made through the internet.Regardless of what state or country they live in.

Yes, you still have to collect sales tax for coins delivered to California.

What they want to do is collect sales tax REGARDLESS of where it's shipped.

But the Mail Order lobby is bribing (er, fighting) hard to keep that from happening

  • OH, my goodness. First a proposal to increase the tax by another percent to a total CA sales tax of %9.25 in my county image Next I'll be forced to move to another state because all sales, even those to folks out of state, will be taxed! That would really be bad. Unless there is a uniform sales tax everywhere in the US I would have to move or get out of business.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

Hmmm - isn't there a slight Constitutional problem with taxing internet sales when the coin is delivered to another state?
