How does this happen. One day MS-63 then PVC

I sent my 1921 Pilgrim for grading in December and it came back with a grade of MS-63.
I thought that that grade was low so I cracked it out and submitted it raw. Well today I got my submission results and this coin was body bagged for PVC. How does one grader see PVC and not another grader? I don't get it. Getting the bodybag was the last thing I thought would happen. Any input would be welcome. Is it worth my while to resubmit it?

Thanks
Ogden

  • May have came from your flips that you sent it in. If they were the soft type and they were subjected to heat or mishandling by the mail service or the grading company, then thats where it probably came from.

This always happens image That's why David Hall said you should send coin(s) in for re-grade and you will have the protection.

I made the same mistake that I broke an MS63 quarter eagle (I felt it is a 64 lock or better), it came back questionable color, twice. image

There's no way PVC residue could have formed in such a short period of time (i.e. if you even sent it in the wrong typr of flip). That said, you should wash the coin with acetone ASAP to remove whatever is on it, and then you can resubmit it.

why the heck are you submitting a pilgrim? it's a $80 coin, right? no, make that $100. oops, no, make that $120. oops!!! no, make that $140.

    just wondering...

  • I was actually looking at a bunch of 1909 Lincoln's recently and I was amazed at the condition of the coins.... until I looked at one under 10x magnification. With the naked eye, you could not see the pvc but under 10x, I noticed a good deal of pvc. Although I'm pretty nutty about my coins, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get that closer look prior to submitting.

I would agree on the Acetone assessment. That's a nice coin in my opinion and I would hate to see the PVC eat away at it.

  • Is it worthwhile to resubmit? I'm going off an older price list but the difference between MS63 and MS65 is almost $500!! If you feel confident that it will grade higher, go for it.
