New web site design (opinions please)

I just got finished with the first proposal for a design for a new web site I have been commissioned to design and develop, and would like your input as to how you think it looks. All of the stories are just fake blabber posted to fill the page for looks, and none of the links to news stories work yet...this is just a one-page thing for now. Thank you for your thoughts in advance.

First, I'd make your hypertext link a more distinctively different color. It doesn't 'stand out' from or contrast enough from the regular color print to be immediately recognizeable as a hypertext link. I like the overall color scheme and the use of boxes on either side of the main text for additional text. I think your navigation buttons could use some more thought. Personally I don't like the fact that all text in the navigation buttons is in lower case. I also think the font size and perhaps color should be contrasting with normal text on the page, so it stands out as a navigation button. Perhaps instead of just using standard rectangles for the nav buttons you could make them into 'tabs', you know, like index file tabs sticking up at the top of the page. Finally, since its a web site about coins, I'd like to see some coin images sprinkled around, either as subtle background, or in the unutilized margin areas on the page. Woops, one more. Since this is a site about errors, etc. you are going to have new finds of interest popping up all the time. I'd suggest another naviagion button labled "whats new" to link to a page that has a discussion about the latest and greatest error find being discussed by specialists. Good luck on your endeavor.

  • looks nice, i agree that the hyperlink colors should change. Looks very simple and to the point the best way a website can be designed.
  • Overall effect is very nice. Professional, clean - very much a "publication" feel.

    Nicely done. image

You'll do tweaks here and there, but it's a sight better than 90% of 'em.

Loaded very fast! A Big plus! Info is well organized and easy to find... A webpage that won't scare people away, I like it, but it could use a picture of Fats Domino or Elvis.

I really like it as a whole.

I can not tell what the picture under the words in the masthead is? Is it bullion? Minterrors? Marble? A pile of outoffocus shiny coins? Mintnews corporate logo?

Just has me confused of what it is and how it adds to the page -
  • Looks professional, and well done.

  • I like it. fast; good layout, easy to read. as far as Elvis, and Fats Domino, I'd only put thier images on if they collected coins; especially Franklins.

I like the layout, font (size/type), easy to find links, and it loads quickly. I hope you can retain these qualities in the final product.

I have spoken to all three owners of the site via telephone this morning (Rich Schemmer, Fred Weinberg, and Dave Camire) and all of them want to go with it like it is....a real plus for me, my first draft was accepted! Now I have the long road of functionality ahead of me.

The backdrop picture in the title is photos taken inside the US mint of an upset mill and a hopper full of planchets. They wanted the photos included in the title bar, but this is about the best I could do and keep the title bar small. I didn't want to oversize the title bar to accomodate what should essentially be only a hint of an image. It's really only there for addition of design, not something that you're actually supposed to be able to consciously decipher.

It will be about a week before there will be real content on the site, and probably another week before the search feature will come to pass. Eventually there will be a lot of stuff on the site, there are a few people writing good news to fill in the blanks, it will just take time to develop. What I showed here was only a design concept, not in any way a completed site. The completed site won't be due until around the 15th of February.

Thanks for taking a look, and thanks for the suggestions and comments. I will update the crowd here as things progress.

Woops! Didn't get to see the corrections before they were taken down. Sounds like the clients liked it, however, so that's great. Good luck.

I have moved the newest version of the page to its final resting spot at www.mintnews.com. Now I have to get to work on the database structure and start getting some real content plugged in. Thanks for all the positive comments and constructive criticism..
