what causes this type of toning?

The toning is a green/blue color. What causes the lines? do you like it?

I'm at work right now but the color shown on this monitor does not look original. It looks to have an odd toning pattern and a color I would not expect to see on a coin that was not subjected to something like bleach or ammonia.

I don't know, I suspect it could be "original" if the source was what I think may be the case - one of the old-style, one-side shows only Whitman folders. The glue that would effect this side of the coin would cause the streaky appearance as that's how it was applied on the folder surface. The funky color/appearance I also think is as much due to the fact when it was put in the folder, it was a basically BU copper coin, and the glue did the rest.

  • I have had some similar things happen in whitman folders. It is even worse on the new zinc cents.

I think TomB could be right. I've seen Coppers go through the washer that have a similar look. It most likely wouldn't get slabbed by one of the top three.

No ideas on the cause. I certainly do not find it attractive.

It is what it is. I'm just pleased I was able to contribute something from my coin experience. I remember popping common, worn Barber Quarters out of their glue-y Whitmans back when I worked for a local dealer (what a great first job for any numismatist image) and seeing the same effect on a few of them, to one degree or another.
