Lincoln wheat fans - What's up with this seller?

Take a look at a few of numiscent's auctions, especially this 1926-S. If you had this coin (and some of the other semi-keys he has listed, wouldn't you get them slabbed first? He looks to be throwing away thousands of dollars on some of these.

Anybody here ever buy from him? Something just doesn't look right, although I don't feel this too strongly. Any thoughts?

Something doesn't look right, but feedback is pretty good. Pictures kinda look funny, almost like there is some rub on the high portions, not sure what to make of it. Pictures almost look faked or something, could also be wizzed coins.

  • He tries but often has stuff that has been cleaned. This coin looks bad and has probably been cleaned more times than my car. I honestly think its that he does not know. I have purchased some coins from him that got into slabs a 1916-P and a 09vdb but I had to return a bunch of others.

  • this guy MUST be full of B/S. He even acknowledges the coin should sell for 80K. But he is giving it a shot starting at $200? Give me a break!!!!!!!!! Unless of course he stole the coin and will take what ever he can get.

    Surface looks pitted.
    I would bet cleaned.
He said it himself, 4G for a 64rd.

    That sums it up.

$80,000?Must be a typo.$8000 i'd believe.Anyway, the '26-s featured in this auction looks too orange to me to be calling RD.If he really thinks it's an 80,000 dollar coin what's he doing starting at $200?Doesn't add up unless he's Santa Claus.

  • Nope, a true 26-S in 65RD will definitely fetch $80k.

Unfortunately, this is not one of them.

that coin will never bring in that kind of jungle. it not that good of a coin "65 my foot" its just a low end mint state coin the color there looks a little washed out. It could have been dipped. he's lucky to have that for high bid bid.

I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

  • I like it but then that doesn't mean I'd pay a big pile o'cash for ANY penny except maybe one of those long hair 1790s types.

  • The coin has definitely been cleaned, and not very well at that. I can still see uncleaned areas along the rim. As for pitting, many coins from this era show pitting, even in mint state. That is the way they came off of the press.

There is only one PCGS example in 65RD for this date. If memory serves me well, it last realized $75000 and currently resides in the #2 Lincoln set. There is only one NGC example in 65RD. Washington rare coins had the coin (I believe it's still picutured on their home page). They were asking 35K, I believe. I'm guessing David Lawrence purchased the coin from them. Because they had it on their home page a while back priced at 45K.

As far as this coin goes... if the seller thought it'd even go 64RD... it should be in a holder. It looks unnatural to me, but I wouldnt say with 100% certainty without seeing it in person. This auction has "STAY AWAY" writen all over it.

Obviously, the seller's talk of MS65RD and it's price is a bit of hyperbole, not quite as blatant as DALEEARNHARTWILLBEMISSED, who gives prices for Gem coins when his are VF or so... its a method of advertising which works on a certain subset of the collecting population, kind of like the furniture store owner, who's every piece has one "retail" price crossed out and the real "sale" price written in.

in either case, the coin is what it is... all his Lincolns look dipped, none look harshly cleaned, some are actually pretty nice coins which would look good in an album, in fact he looks like he's breaking up an attractive, decent if not registry quality set. For an MS62 26-S I might pay $130 or so. oh, the price has gone higher than that?

well, there's always another coin, and if i'm concerned about whether a high ticket piece will slab, i will buy it already in an N or P slab.

wow, look at the jump, bid for a 63 is $145, bid for a 64 is $2800!

i see your original point, coppernicus, if any of his coins can get into the money slabs there's a small fortune to be made...

obviously the bidders at $600+ are willing to take that gamble... and this coin might just be a 63.5!
would one of those be worth the average of the 63 and 64 prices, say $1475? or is the scale between those numbers logarithmic, so that a 63.9 is worth 2700 but a 63.5 is only worth, say $200?

dunno, pretty philosophical for so early, good morning, all. image
