Save this coin, please!

I originally had this coin on my Watch List, but I'm afraid it's going to go for a little higher than I can afford.

Auction

In MS63 it's a $2,000 coin, MS64 $3,000, and MS65 $17,000. After checking it again today, I noticed there's a new high bidder. Anyone one to guess where this coin's destiney lies? I'm thinking "ACG MS65."

Please save it from a fate worse than jewelry! I won't feel bad if I lose this one to anyone here on the boards! image

Btw, I admire the seller for letting this one go with no reserve. Very nice coin for that kind of auction strategy.

  • Would love too, but my coin budget for the next couple of months is going to be very slim! I'd really hate to see AH win that nickel and reholder into one of his tombs!

  • I believe that this coin will bring all the money. I bet it goes for around $2K.

I am in no way a Buffalo Nickel guy, but I am willing to buy it if it stays reasonable between 1500 and 1750. I will have it at my table (my first) at LB. Anyone interested can then come see it and buy it from me at my cost. Sound fair?

Is that the same coin that's shown on the photo certificate? Compare the detail at the buffalos hip.

  • Blackhawk, I agree that sure looks different????

  • I don't have any experience with these old ANACS certifications. Is it easy to switch coins, or are they sealed in any way?

It is also possible that the lighting from the 15 year old ANACS photos shows the coin differently than the scans from recently.

There is another thread featuring "proof" Mercury dimes by this same seller. Those coins also look different than the certification photos. Great Sellerimage

The seller posted a new picture which, upon examination, leads me to a stronger conclusion that the pictured coin is not the offered coin. First, the picture has some markings (die polish?) below its head. Second, its hip bone is well defined. Third, so is the "indian's" mouth, as well as his hair. These are not true of the coin that is offered. As well, the coin that is offered seems to have some dings in his hair which are not present in the ANACS photo.

Those are NOT the same coins.

EDIT: Upon further review...this IS the same coin. The earlier picture (below) is too deceiving...I take back what I said. Look at the color streak in the above pic and you can see them in the B&W pic below. I don't believe that can be replicated to easily. I mean, how many 27-S Buffs are you going to find like that with a good strike? It's the same coin.

PS: One more thing...it does "look" to be MS63....from the above pic.

The additional blowup is of the certificate. I don't think these coins are the same.

Mmmmm - too close to call without seeing the coin and the cert in person. But based on these images alone I don't think you can conclusively say they aren't the same coin.
  • Too close to call. Some of the feather detail looks like a match but some of the cheek detail looks a tad off. But Russ has showed us all that the same coin can look totally different depending on how it was photographed.
  • "Danger, Will Robinson! Danger, Will Robinson!"

My instinct says to stay away. The doubts about it posted in this thread are a bit too much of a concern.

The fact that people are saying "too close to call" should tell you something. You just don't find 27-S's out on the street, you know. I still think it's the same coin. image

That being said what you really should do is ask the seller if he can get the thing slabbed first. OR get a return policy...or ignore it and go find a slabbed one. Whatever makes you confortable.
