Early Carson City Dimes

Why are so many of these rare coins have corrosion, pitted, damaged, etc. It seems like 75%+ have some kind of damage.
Collecting since 1976.

Because the planchets, in general, were screwed up.

Awesome coin! Why would a bad planchet be condusive to forming corrosion? I thought dirt, water, and other particles instigate corrosion. Or.....what exactly is corrosion?

Also, on your coin, the technical grade appears AU......how would the market treat the grade on your coin. Is there any luster? Whats around the rim?

i think the planchets were too pure, and thus more susceptible to corrosion. anymore, and i'm lost...

Dunno how the mkrt will treat my coin. The details grade is AU to ChAU, and is one of the finest surviving specimens. Unfortunately, it will never slab by PCGS or NGC due to the corrosion. (Aside from the lone UNC, there is no slabbed specimen between VF35 and UNC. And, there's only a few slabbed ChVF specimens!)

There's nothing around the rim, and the corrosion and toning would make it hard for me to brag about its luster.

BTW, before anyone asks -- the coin is genuine and had been slabbed by ANACS (net EF40, AU details). The key diag -- the die crack by the MM -- is there.

The planchets were fine after 1874, and I have seen the finest '73-CC w/a dime. I have held it, and I know its owner. (I'm not sure that he still has it though, but I think so... I'll find out.)

    EVP,

I have a 1876-CC Dime Doubled Die that was struck from heavily rusted dies. The coin looks like its......out of focus. Although its BU with nice old fashion toning, in fact NGC graded it MS64. Its seems like the CC mint had a tough time early on with its dimes, I wonder why not with the other demoninations as much?

The finest '73-CC w/a dime, NGC MS65, will be in the Superior Feb pre-LB auction. It is the only slabbed specimen above VF35...

EVP,i think i saw the only slabbed mint-state '73-CC dime a few years ago (maybe more than a few years ago, actually)at a coin show here in Denver. The owner/dealer had just bought it for his seated dime collection and had it in his case but it wasn't for sale.

'twas a beauty...his seated dime collection was insured for $1,000,000 he told me...
