Please help test our new website

We've been working on a new website for some time now and are getting close to launch time. It seems that most of the functionality is there, but some de-bugging still remains. I wanted to ask for your help in playing around with it and letting me know if you encounter any issues, have compliments, complaints or suggestions.

The listed inventory is very out of date so please don't order anything, but do feel free to test the shopping cart and anything else. We'd really like to hear how we can make it as user friendly and interesting as possible.

Here's the link, don't hold back.

New website

Thanks!

It looks nice, but wants to download something from "allaire" to my system. That's a bit annoying. I couldn't deal with the constant request to run the download, so I didn't look around very much.
  • The one thing that I REALLY hate when I visit a web site are things that scroll like you have at the top of the page.

I also do not care for the menu to select the type of coins that you want.

They may look "cool", but I prefer a clean static site to one that has a bunch of "eye candy".

Tonelover - I experienced the same issue with the download request on every page and closed the site after three pages. Load time was extremely slow and I'm right next to the web server with a T-3 trunk to the backbone, so it's not my connection.

The download request was for a JDK package for CFM, which means it's trying to load some java language for the Cold Fusion used for the site. I would consider the possibility of looking into the development stages and see if there minght have been something forgotten, left off, or moved out of place to where the server cannot find it. If that doesn't work, I would suggest moving away from Cold Fusion altogether - having a constant popup for downloads like that will completely kill your business.

I'm not hip on scrolling messages either. Most either move too fast to keep up with or move so slowly I get bored with them quickly. It would probably be best to stick with a pleasing look without all the stuff moving around on the screen.

Another thing is that I am viewing your site with a 1024 wide monitor, and your site appears to be one that was designed to be centered on the screen, but isn't. It's scrunched over to the left. A couple of simple HTML tags woud solve that.

On the plus side, I like your choice of colors, I like the images of the coins, and I like the overall content of the site. It just needs a little artistic cleaning up...but the only reason I even see all of this is because I have been developing web sites for years. I don't want to be unjustifiably critical of a nice site that is well put together and rather easy to navigate (if you get rid of that download issue).

Edited to add: I also noticed the site shows "untitled document" in the header. You might want to change that - it is reflected in the top of the browser window and on the button for the browser instance in the taskbar for windows.

It was slow to load up on dialup. Having the java applet required for news is unnecessary. Go to Dynamic Drive and use one of their dhtml scripts. Improves speed a lot. The horizontal scrolling coins is an OK concept, but if you do that you need to move the vertical motion. You don't want different motions right after each other. You may hate microsoft, but they have a great article called "Inductive User Interface." I think it's worth reading for any web designer. I have read it multiple times. They also have a nice section just on UI Design.

You can also move the login part to the top header bar. Most people are familiar with that approach, though where you have it is OK. The main image with the navigation is OK. You've got it split out into multiple graphics for faster loading. In the end, it's easier to keep it in fewer graphics and use a menuing program to drop down menus from the image areas. Here's a great program to do this. It can generate Java script or embed right into ASP/ASP.NET so it works no matter what environment/browser. Coalesys WebMenu. This can also help get people where you want them from the top page and skip intermediate pages.

The inventory listing is fine. You might consider doing two versions of handling windows. One that uses a popup window and one that does not. Helpful for people who want the big pic but also see the details at the same time.

Actually, the more I see the two moving sections, the more I don't like it. I think having a DHTML news reel will be best and drop the moving pics at the top. I have the same complaint about Pinnacle's site.

I agree with the slow loading, and I have a cable modem. Might relate to the internet disruptions over the past few days.

    Hey Jon,

No problems here with any download issues, though I could live without the constantly scrolling imagery at the top. I definitely think it's a wise ideal to have samples constantly refreshing, though - were the decision up to me I'd try and see if an elegantly rotating/refreshing image of a coin for sale were to appear in the upper right hand corner, staying basically put while rotating from obv to rev before a new coin appears.

That said I think it's coming along, and look forward to personalizing the site with my want list info, etc. image

I gave up !! Way Sloooooow.
  • I typically won't download anything to use a website and I didn't this time either. I am not sure what functionality the download adds but I seem to be able to navigate without it. Just annoying to have it keep popping up.

I really like the magnifier navigation idea. The images won't come up if scripting is diabled but that doesn't seem to affect navigation so that is good.

Another thing to consider is the javascript for a popup window like for signing up for your newsletter. A portion of visitors are going to have scripting disabled. For something that can be done with straight html (target=_blank), you might want to not use scripting. I would lose the scrolly thing at the top and make your banner a little wider too.

Those are just some thoughts based upon my own experience and biases. I really think that it is a very nice, well designed, clean and professional looking site.

I agree with others. Cable Broadband and very slow. I had to download a program to view the web-site. I normally would not have proceeded with the download. I only continued due to the fact that I knew of you from this message board.
  • Thanks so far everyone. Great comments and I'll forward them to our designer. Keep 'em coming if it's not too much of a hassle. image

First off, it seems to have lots of fancy scripts and java and stuff like that. That's extremely annoying, slows the machine down, sucks up memory, and begs to be incompatible with someones machine/browser/etc.

I dislike the scrolling text. Usually don't see it until it has half scrolled by. Can't be bothered to read it anyway. After all, if it were important, then it wouldn't be a little scrolling text.

With few other windows open, your web site seemed to suck up most of my available resources. I thought my computer was going to crash. Based on what I usually have open and my machine doesn't crash to just your window, I'd have to assume that your site sucked up more resources than having open Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and 3-4 Netscape windows.

I'd like to see a short description of the coin under the link for that coin. I won't click on every coin in a section just to see if one meets my needs. After a few clicks, I'll give up and move on to a different company to look for coins.

I STRONGLY dislike clicking on the picture and it bringing me to a new page. How about a quick little pop-up window for clicking on a picture. Maybe a "pop-under" window?

I disliked the listing of commems by date and not series.

It seems like there are only 10 coins per "page". I'd rather have the ability to see all on one page rather than having to keep hitting the next button.

BTW, what is your current "real" web site address? Everyone here has such praise for your company, but I can never remember the web address. image

  • I suppose it's okay.
I did a search for seated quarters. It said it couldn't find any and to try again.
    Why?
If it can't find them the first time, does it look harder the second time?

    Ray
  • Ok, I clicked on the magnifying glass thingy for seated quarters and came up with an 1888-S.
Guess it does look around the back room if you do a search a second time.

Besides the already mentioned the magnifying glass is too big and the white center of it when no coin is selected is ugly.
  • Some people also worry about having to dowload off a site just to look at it, viruses and all those goodies. I would go CGI or ASP.

While hovering my mouse over the "Recent News" scrolling thing, my IE browser displayed this in the status bar: "Unregistered A. News Scroll Java applet. http://japplets.tripod.com" That doesn't seem right.

You already heard comments on the slowness. I have to echo the other comments about the popup to download some Allaire thing (very bad) and the scrolling (it doesn't do anything for me).

I think the photos of the example Half-cent and the Colonial displayed in the magnifying glass are too dark.

On the FAQ page, there's no text under "What are my coins worth" except for a single letter "t".

On your About Us page, you misspelled the last name of James Di Georgia.

On the pages where you list coins, make all the data about the coin into a link to more details instead of the tiny word "Details" at the end of the line. I'd like to be able to click on the date, type, grade, etc. to get all the details.

I think the menu around the glass is kind of hokey... just my thought...

Loose all the fast scrolling pics (upper right corner) and concentrate on the product you want to sell... hilite one coin from the chosen denomination and present it

slow, slow slow on my DSL, I'll try from work tomorrow on one of the T1s...

I, and probably numerous other users, no longer download extaneous programs/files from the internet anymore, contamination risk is too high and it clutters up the computer.

You've done just about everything to discourage users...maybe add some music and a popup or something image

I liked the old site, plain & easy to use.

Once I accepted the download of the Allaire software, the speed was fine. Before that, there were horrendous delays on each page before I was prompted once more to accept the Allaire download.

It seems from reading the various comments that by and large (and this is very logical) speed and ease of use is paramount to the target audience - rabid coin collectors who don't want to download anything - just see more pics of great coins.

This being the case I would sacrifice a lot of the "it would be cool" features for something that works well in a bare-bones sense, then, add a bit of nice design feature here and there without unneccessarily bogging it down.

Of course no one will ever be completely satisfied no matter whatcha do - the best authors of design for the web and interface issues often contradict each other.

You're doing the absolute right thing by asking for feedback from your primary audience - in fact, I can only imagine how many usability testers would love to have a target audience so well-defined. My perspective on this is as a designer - and I'd keep on listening to the opinions of the many programming types that seem to populate this board.

I have found PHP couple with MySQL to be one of the easiest, best, and lowest cost (free) tools to use...and since it's open source, there are a LOT of tutorials and developer's hints/tools out there. CGI is way outdated for most stuff.

    suggestions:

    dump the "allaire" thing

can the scrolling stuff at the top - makes the initial load WAY slow, especially on my dialup

the menu thing around the magnifiying glass is painfully slow

color scheme is not easy on the eyes - maybe too much contrast?

i clicked "shop" & it took FOREVER to do anything!

at that point, i gave up.

gee I just love the moving coins on top...but then again I like to shoot trap and skeet and they really remind me of moving targets that I want to shoot at......LOL good luck with the site!

  • I'll be honest with you. This site is good but I prefer the one you have now. It is simpler, faster, easy to navigate, and more coins listed on the same page.
  • The site is acceptable but even after the web cleared up, it's still kinda slow. Kill the scrolling stuff - I won't hang around long enough to read it, fix the @#$%^& install for Allaire (never gonna happen on my machine!) and maybe tone down the contrast on the colors. It really should shade more towards neutral to be easy and pleasing on the eyes.
