When does PCGS update the population reports?

HJPHJP Posts: 423 ✭✭✭
Hi,

I am wondering when PCGS updates the population reports. On low population coins, the price sensitvity is very volatile and adding one or two coins to the total population could have a large impact on price.

Ethics would seem to dictate that the population report for a given coin should be updated prior to the coin being returned to the submitter, or within say 24 hrs of being graded.

Certainly, low population coins that have been graded should not be allowed to be offered for sale until they are counted in the total population.

I wonder what PCGS policy is on this issue?

I believe they update it once a week.

Do you know if it is their stated policy to update the population reports once a week?

I've said it before....I have a pop. 0 coin, showed PCGS the coin, it's still pop. o a year later! So, it makes the whole population suspect, to me. Also, don't forget all those old holders that don't get accounted for when new varieties are recognized. Pop. 0 varieties may actually be relatively common...it takes years to really know.

In theory, the pop report is updated as soon as the grade from the submission is added to the database. Does that always happen with the html version of the report? No. But, sometimes you can get the updated numbers for the coin sooner by entering the coin number directly in the lookup box located in the upper right on the opening page for the pop reports.

Does anyone know what is PCGS stated policy is for when a coin that they grade will be added to the population reports?

I am wondering about some rumors I have heard regarding intentionally withholding coins from the population reports. If this is the case, we have some real credibility & ethics issues to deal with.

    HJP,

There is no "stated" policy; at least not a public one.
