This seller just closed on a raw 1909-S VDB last night and at the same time was selling three others, all raw. The coin that has already closed was the same scan as this LINKED 09-S VDB and his other two are using the same scan.

  • You know what - I think you have to have your head examined to buy anything over a couple of dollars raw on ebay. OK - maybe like GSA dollars or government packaged proof sets are ok - and if there's a dealer that you know and trust that'd be ok too but there's just too much shady business going on there to make me feel all warm and fuzzy ya know Pat? image

I have a 1909-S-VDB Lincoln cent that I sent to PCGS and it came back BB'ed for questionable color or toning. If it were fake, they would have said so. I've looked under a microscope and all the diagnostics that have to be there are there. I can see no wear, but can see why there might be a question of color, i.e. cleaned??. Now, I'm not too much in to Lincoln cents so I'd like to unload it. Ebay seems like the logical choice. Question: Should I take REALLY nice pictures with my Nikon Coolpix camera to show all the proper diagnostics, or send it to ANACS and get net graded, or take it to a dealer and get ripped a new one?

ANACS would be a good bet, I think. If it's cleaned, they'll say so, but they'll also authenticate it. Cleaned coins seem to get plenty of bids in eBay, so you should still get good money for it.

Tom, another alternative is to send it to NCS they will slab and authenticate it for you.
  • I'd hope that the buyer would look at the sellers feedback and bid accordingly. Looks like he's a winner!

I emailed the seller, asking him to explain how he can have the same images posted for two different listings of his.

I also emailed the buyer of one of this seller's recent listings, letting him know that the image of the coin he bought is being used with a current listing of the seller's, for the same date and grade coin.

I haven't received a reply from either party, yet.
  • I bought this Oregon on 10/01/02 and they are still using the same image and description.

I am positive the image is of my coin because the small pink mark above the A in DOLLAR is readily apparent.

TJK: PCGS needs to learn how to grade genuine toning on 1909 VDBs -- although mine was not an S. I have a very pretty blue/purple/green toned MS 1909 VDB that was body bagged. I posted about it also going BB and received half a dozen responses from others whose MS 1909s with similar toning also were BBd. Not all of those coins could have been AT and I still do not think mine is. It's a heck of a thing to send in your quarterly freebie (which 1909s were some time back) and get it bagged! As for the multiple raw VDB Ss, somebody has a lot of explaining to do...

A couple of things I do to protect myself:
    1) I dont buy anything in the money from anyone with less than 30 feedback.
    2) I rarely buy anything over $100 if its raw.

    A note about pics:
I use a generic way of naming my pics. I put the date, mintmark, and special designation. If I have something like a 36-S in PCGS 66RD... I name it 1936s66rd. Then I link my pic in the auction. The auction closes. I delete the pic. If I happen to get another 36-S in PCGS 66RD later, I again name it 1936s66rd. Then I post it up for auction. Well, because they're the same name, it pulls up the new pic in the old auction. It appears from the surface that I'm auctioning the same coin again, but the coin is a completely different one. I didnt check the guy's other auctions, so I dont know if that's the case here. I just thought I might pass that possiblity alone.

His coin is not something I'd buy, because it brakes both my "rules."

  • David- In this case...who needs rules. This guy and his auctions have "Trouble" written all over it!! Last year.....I saved a guy a few thousand $$ on some slabbed coins he had won. I warned him about the seller...and it turns out he was on the run from the police for some Ebay scams. Anyway....it feels better to know the guys and gals you are dealing with. So what do you have for me David?? Get back that 1913 PCGS MS65RD that you sold a few months back. It looked nice...and I am still bummed about that one.....not making its way into my collection.

    Marc,

Yah, those are just generic rules I used in moments of weakness. I generally have enough since to keep myself from getting ripped off. Besides, those SVDB's are way below what I collect. Unfortunatly, what I collect is way below what you collect... lol. I'm afraid that 13-P is froze up for a while image. I'll let you know if it becomes availible.

Sorry man I dont have anything (availible image) that you dont already have.

the SVDB is on the short list of those coins that "must be slabbed"
also the '14-d, and 22 plain lincolns, the 16D merc and 01-s quarter, 93S dollar, etc.

relatively new information from the seller:

On Jan-27-03 at 16:59:40 PST, seller added the following information:
Sorry the description has an error it doesnt have an S on it but i was told that it was one so i dont know if it is or not.

that should clear it up for everyone..."it doesn't have an S on it"...

150 bucks for a circulated 1909 VDB without an S...a new record...history is being made you all...image

  • Fountain Inn is in the sticks down here. They're not too bright there. I know, I've been there.
A 1943 copper Lincoln will still only buy a gumball out of the machine, but you can purchase the machine and the store with that same cent.

Less than a year ago,in a coin shop they had a PCGS 1909SVDB with the most horrible looking toning.
I thought for sure the coin was dipped and didnt even deserve to be in PCGS plastic.
Maybe it was submitted multiple times untill it WAS slabbed.

  • Jeesh.. that's hilarious

This gentleman must have had a brain fart and it seems to have ruptured the frontal lobe. Please avoid at all costs as he's highly delirious, and frankly, he stinks.

    Got Morgan?
  • I too have been through Fountain Inn... Another classic city name for my home state...
With that picture, are you sure that there is a VDB too?

    >>>Sorry the description has an error it doesnt have an S on it but i was told that it was one so i dont know if it is or not >>

This auction is a classic and deserves to be archived...an ebay coin auction hall of shame to shared with those CUers that follow us all.A few weeks ago,i found an auction for "a mountain of wheat pennies with a 1909 VDB" where the seller was throwing in a 1909 VDB (the auction title didn't indicate the thrown in 1909 penny had an 'S' on it) that, according to his auction description, "has a readable mintmark."

Was going to provide a link to that auction for ya all but couldn't find it a few days later after seeing it...i won't make that mistake again...image...i was told that...ah never mind...
