Obverse toning, Reverse toning, and two sided toned Morgans

I know that in the market there is a preference for obverse toned Mogans, and now NGC and PCGS will put the reverse of the coin on the front of the slab if the toning on this side is better looking. How does everyone feel about this? Do you pay more of a premium for obverse versus reverse toning? Do you avoid coins that only have reverse toning? And how about two sided toned coins? - Are those the REAL monsters of the toned Morgan world? Just wondering what everyone thinks.

Yes the two sided nice ones are the real monsters.
I think with pcgs you have to write on the submission form to holder reverse out or they won't automatically do it.

Yes, don't have much of a choice. If you find two Morgans with equivalent toning, one obverse tone and one reverse tone the obverse toned coin will sell at a premium over its reverse toned counterpart.

No

Being toned on both sides does not make a coin a Monster. A coin is what it is. If it doesn't have great color, flash, and knockout eye appeal the coin will not qualify as a Monster.
I've bought quite a number of beautifully reverse-toned Morgans but can rarely get much of a premium for them when selling. The only exception is if the color is.......well.....exceptional.
Two-sided toned coins are interesting, but mostly just as a novelty. Of course, I'm talking about bag toned coins here as most envelope toned coins show two sided toning. For a bag-toned coin to show two sided toning, the coin typically had to sit on edge in a crease of the bag. Can't be too many like that out there.
Out of several hundred toned GSA's that I've put away through the years, only 5-10 are full two sided toned. Interestingly, in almost every case, the two sides look nothing alike.

Do you remember mine? Has the market improved at all for exceptionally toned Morgans? Or is the margin still tight? It is such a subjective
market, do you not agree? Bullion and current world events should have little impact on this area of numismatics. Do you agree?
I may submit my dollar to Goldberg Auctions in May depending on how things go.
Take care and hope that you've recovered OK from the storm.

No way to forget your coin!
The market still appears to be strong for top quality toned coins of all demoninations but it's almost impossible to predict what any given coin will bring. It's still, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". In other words, it will always be a 'subjective' market.

Based on the scan, I'd have to guess it's an envelope-toned piece although the colors look brighter than typically encountered for such pieces. They're usually much more pastel.

I updated my toned morgan page if anyone is interested. The link is in my signature. I have many new ones in the mail and cant wait to take their pictures. 3 of the morgans are new from the local coin store today. 2 slabbed and one raw.

I'll have to believe you on that. I looked a little longer and see where your coming from. Reminds me once again that images on the web can be highly decieving. The piece can be either way, worse or better than the image.
