Are all Peace Dollars weakly struck on the reverse, or just certain years?

This is the 1922-D Peace Dollar that came in with a batch of coins I bought:

I'm running this on eBay right now, so I decided to take a look at other '22-D's that have closed recently. The ones I looked at all had that flat lettering across the top on the reverse. This one seems much stronger than the others. Better strike than most?

  • Hi -- the flatness of the design is very typical of Peace Dollars -- most years, really.
Have a look at a 1921 High Relief sometime to see what the design really could have been.

    Russ,

Many, though certainly not all, Peace Dollars display weak strikes. It varies from issue to issue and within each date, as well. The one you imaged does not appear to be particularly well struck, in my opinion.

Here are some images for you to study, for comparison purposes.

  • Most typically weak although the 23-p, 24-p, 25-p, 26-p, 26-d, 34-p, and 35-p are normally better than the others. Most of the S mints were not good at all, although their morgans were some of the best.

  • Here are some awesome images of a 1921 High Relief --> reverse and obverse -- The 'coinsite.com' server is slow today. Wait for 'em. They are worth it.

  • With the ones I have, the lettering does suffer on the reverse. Also on some, the legs suffer from weakness.
