Talking about bust doller....

eBay

I can't explain why, but it looks odd to me...your thoughts?

  • Good Grief! Talk about lifting and separating! I'm glad 22 people appear to have the cash to throw around! Have they no knowledge of counterfitting? I had a heart attack paying $600 for 2 coins today! OY VEY!!! image

Come on how, you sound skeptical. I'm sure there are lots of $14,000 raw coins on eBay being sold by a seller that appears to have 100% of his feedback from purchases.

Hey, maybe it is 100% OK, but I think you'd have to be insane to buy this coin raw on eBay.

Is there any way to tell it's a fake?
As I'm a novice, I can't tell it is.....just looks odd to me.

That one's ok, i think this one was a steal, however.

    "unusual U.S. dollar"

    what are people thinking?

  • Toyo:

Here's a link on early dollars that's pretty good. There's also a link out there on counterfit early dollars. I know that CoinWorld has published several good articles on the subject. Maybe someone can add to this.

Great link, thanks Frank. I just usually take a peek in Reiver if something looks even close to real.

The one on your post looks like she swallowed a live frog! I understand that a lot of these come from Southeast Asia - anyone have one? I think Russ has a fake one as well.

I though they were trade dollars.

    Thanks for the link, Frankimage
Greg-I agree with you...we should trust each other. I want that coin badly, but because I've spent too much money this month, I think I should give you a right to bid on it as a forum representativeimage
  • I think they do those as well - but I seem to recall from the article that a lot of fake bust dollars came from that side of the world as well.

There seem to be a couple of die varieties that include "hefty McG's" I just don't see one that has the closed mouth coupled with the top curls being so close to the "ER" of Liberty.

And it looks like a "done deal."

  • The new owner will probably try to sell this one to a "greater fool." I suggest changing the aution title from "1799 Draped Bust $1 MS60 - Gorgeous and Rare! " to "1799 Draped Bust $1 MS60 - Gorgeous, Rare, and FAKE!"

One further comment about this oddity -- even if the coin were real, it seems that it would be net graded something like "AU55 details, cleaned and retoned, EF45 net." How could such a coin sell for more than $ 6000 !
