Frank & Lucy (and others) 1955 MS66 FBL ~ What would you pay?

I was just offered this coin and was wondering what you think a good price for it would be.

Exactly the year I need! I saw a nicer one go on Ebay for 170, and I saw a very ugly one gor for 350 at Long Beach.... I have tried to be picky with this year but I am finding that there are not enough ms66's to go around...... I might pay around 250 for it....... Would like too see it in person though.... Buy it, and if you hate it, I'll buy it from you...

I personally don't like that dark a tone on Franklins, it tends to hide the detail that makes them such a nice coin when they're brightened or nicely toned. Though that's a tough date, I personally would wait for a nicer piece to come along. IF you must have it - I wouldn't go over $300 for it.

I have often happily discovered that these coins are much nicer looking in person, hard to capture this type of toning with a pic or scan..

I don't know why it is, but the 55's seem to all suffer from this type of toning... I know there are brilliant examples out there, those will command a premium, but all the higher grade ones I have seen have this type of toning... I have a raw one on hold at a coin store, toning isnt as dark and this baby has ms66fbl written all over it...... But I still want one already holdered.....

  • True - but I've seen plenty of these dark speckly type Franklins to know that they are just not appealing. This may be a technical 66FBL - but eye appeal wise I think Jim can do a lot better. IMHO

  • I've got two of these in my 55 mint set. Y'all are talking more money that the set is valued at, why. (I'm Learning). They have not been graded MS66 though.

Well, ms66fbl isn't a easy grade to come buy. At Long Beach I looked thru many 55 mint sets that where for sale, almost all of them had the hlves with this type of toning, very few of them where FBL, and none of what I saw would grade ms66. If yours will, I'll buy that set from you...

  • That's it in a nutshell Billy - MS66FBL's for this year are rather scarce - less than 100 graded by PCGS, but they are still obtainable - just gotta be persistent.

Here's mine - dark toned - but it's russet and it really lets the brilliance through.

A very clean lightly toned 55 that I have been trying to con Frank out of for months!

Frank, its the ugliest thing I have seen!

  • One of these days you might get to see it in person Lucille - then you will be REALLY jealous! imageimage
  • Not trying to steal this thread, but I just fugured out what FBL meant. So I dove into the set and what do you know... the "S" & "D" Franklins are missing! But, the "P" has lines on the bottom of the bell and hazy finish.

Thanks for learning me, and good kuck on the 55 you're looking at.

    Here's a thread I just posted on FBL's

  • Thanks for the opinions...

I think that I will probably pass on this one. I just don't like the dark toning.

Now it may look better in person, but he is asking to much to take that chance.

Lucy, it's all yours if you want it image
